i spent the arvo up in the shed doing a service on the bike and i adjusted the chain as it was pretty loose, thing is as i was turning the wheel over to check the tension the chain would go very tight and if i were to loosen it it would be way to loose,so im wondering if i give the chain a good clean as its gunky and filthy even tho the rear sprocket is sweet,im wondering if the chain is kapoot or if it can be saved also is there anything diffucult re pulling the front sprocket cover off.ill be going to the shops once they open here to buy a workshop manual..any help with this will be greatly appreciated again, thanks,,oh i should mention the bikes a 2000 model 1200

Tight spots mean chain is dying or is dead .Find the tightest spot buy rotating wheel
and adjust chain at that spot .This will mean it will be way loose at other spots but
that's better than too tight .
