Doooooh .....
What are the chances .
Living in the Obi Obi valley after a mini cyclone hit left us with lost of crap to preferably burn off . Trouble is you need a permit to do so which is near
impossible to get .Now if you dont burn it , it eventually creates a fire hazard in it's self . What every one does is light it on a damp day and hope
no one notices .
I got home from work the other day and the farm across the road had lit a large burn off fire .I figured since he was making a lot of smoke i could get away with lighting our pile . No chance of getting caught of having a fire with no permit .
Mine was going quite well when i noticed the fire across the road had got out of control and a FIRETRUCK was parking outside our house .
BUSTED BIGTIME .

Damned if you do and damned if you don't hey Gus.
I burn off a pile about once a fortnight, that way it is not too big to get out of control and the rubbish build up is kept to a minimum. If the council gave me more free dump vouchers or even free dumping more often then i would not need to break the law each fortnight.

" It's a secondary fire caused by a cinder from the fire across the road"

Alls well then. I've got a big pile of branches down the back but I won't be lighting it until the middle of winter.

A friend of mine has a fire pit about 1.5 metres diameter surrounded by old bricks and rocks in his back yard.
Whilst having one of his regular "burn offs" a disgruntled neighbour burst in and threatened to call the fire brigade.
My friend pointed out the camp oven and plate of sausages nearby and invited the neighbour to join him for a meal.
He declined the very generous offer.
Moral: make your burn off look like a cooking fire

Re: Doooooh .....
So I guess from now on we will have to refere to Gus as " Smoey " and the Bandit.
ps. I have met Gus and the resemblance to Burt Reynolds is uncanny.

Re: Doooooh .....
A few years ago decided to burn a large pile, 4x4x2 mtr, of oak leaves on the gravel drive into the property. No fire permits required. Within fifteen minutes of lighting it, on a Monday afternoon, a very irate council supervisor appeared and told me he was going to fine me $200 and two points, whatever that meant, if I didn't put it out there and then. Most of the leaves had burned at this stage and very little was left but repeating his threat I put the hose on it. Finished up with a black slurry mess on the drive. Questioning the logic of this he told me that should I burn leaf litter on Tuesdays instead then that would have been okay. You wonder sometimes??

Well, I put the above idea into practice yesterday.
I was very pleased with the progress of my "burn off" until the house smoke alarms activated
I'm just relieved it didn't trigger the smoke alarms at Mr Grumpy's house next door.
Oh well, back to the drawing board
