1250 Air Box Lid Question
I know this has been gone over a thousnad times before. But hey, what the hec. Am going over , and getting to know my new(ish) 1250. As we do. Checked the air filter. Naaaa, it looks a bit dirty. Get a new one . Bought a DNA one. The guy that designed the K&N filters went out on his own and formed this company some time ago. So they are just as good. And a little cheaper. $66.65 from Serco. The distributer. Anyway. Removed the lid. Yanked the stupid snorkel out. Now I'm wondering if I should do the "air box lid massacre trick". Or should I wait until I get the pair/vap reoval kit from Dale Walker, and do it then. Will it "Pop" too much if I open it up now ? The DNA filter is virtually the same as a K&N, so it should let some more air in just as it is. Thanks.

Re: 1250 Air Box Lid Question
You could do what I did. I bought another airbox lid just in case I didn't like the mods I did to the original one. I picked up the spare for less than $50. I"m still running the paper style filter, but the noise it makes when getting into it,

Re: 1250 Air Box Lid Question
As a side note to this topic. I thought I should take a look at Jans new Gladius;s air filter. Wow ! what a delight to work on. The tank is rear hinged. Lifts right up. Has a stay to hold it. Air box is massive compared to the Bandits. Seven screws on lid. Air filter is like brand new. Is nearly twice the size of the Bandits as well. Makes you wonder. ??? She has a Scorpion muffler that sounds great. Nothing to worry about there.

Re: 1250 Air Box Lid Question
The Pair only take air form the Airbox and dumps it in the Exhaust when you roll off the gas, to burn un-burnt fuel.
Just plug the hose at the join, Just under the tank on the right hand side. No more Popping!

Re: 1250 Air Box Lid Question
I went the full crew cut and took the complete top off (after I sourced a new lid just in case it all went pear shaped). I also put in a 1200 K&N air filter (PN SU-6000) as it has the full filter, the 1250 version has approx 10% blocked. The noise is a little louder, but not unbearable (to me at least) and it also contibuted to the 125.6 rwhp.
Re: 1250 Air Box Lid Question
Well with not much more than 300 kms on my GSX over 3 weeks (yeah - I know I am slack but it is "Build up season" here in Darwin - and the car is just a bit more inviting at present at 32 degrees and 90% humidity!!!)
I am interested in some more operating on the GSX.
I did the exhaust and actually enjoy the little pops and crackles I get when slowing & backing off, but if the air cleaner mods are this easy - then why not give it a bit of a bash. Looks easy enough to get into.
Is the plastic easy enough to cut?
Any hints on cutting??
Cheers
Steve

Re: 1250 Air Box Lid Question
Hacksaw and a steel nerve , its pretty easy going really. Having a spare lid helps steady the hand as well.
I think cutting the complete top off is simpler than multi holes, you only need the lip to keep the edge of the filter from falling off. I haven't seen any reports stating determental effects between a single hole or the complete chop. Seems to make sense to me to allow as much air in with the lease amount of restrictions. I assume there was some reason to have had the lid designed the way it was, however I haven't had any problems since going the chop.

Re: 1250 Air Box Lid Question
I honestly have to say - I dunno! On my old Torana, I know the design of the air genuine GMH Air intake intake was to try to deflect dust and dirt.
The boys (and me) used to replace with a simpler type of intake which allowed air all around.
So - my GUESS is that the original design of Suzi is that dust and dirt would be "swept away" by the natural airflow and that only the "cleanest air" would get in.
So - over to to the gurus!
To snip or not to snip ;

Re: 1250 Air Box Lid Question
I masked where I wanted to cut, and used a cobing saw. Slow and steady. Then sanded off edges.

Don't the pops and crackles indicate a too lean mixture which can lead to mechanical problems (detonating etc)?

Re: 1250 Air Box Lid Question
I don't think fuel in the exhaust means the vehicle is running poorly in all cases
