Commuting Distance
Just wondering how far us good folk commute on their Bandits if you ride to work? Currently I can stretch mine out to 10km
I ask because come early Oct we’re moving and I’ll be looking at 40km each way.
We will be able to share a car a few days a week but to be honest riding keeps me sane and I’d like to ride as often as I can but factor in the tyre usage and extra servicing and wear and tear and it becomes uneconomical. I wouldn’t even consider it on the FZ1 with the Power Pures that are on it but even PR2’s (current) or PR3’s in the future on the Bandit would be turned too trash a bit quickly for my liking.
If it becomes too much I guess I’d be looking for another type of bike. A cruiser maybe.
I know Kaupy travels about the same distance and his is all freeway. Mine will be similar with only 4 or 5 turns involved.
So how far do you commute?
Re: Commuting Distance
at the moment,i`m doing 40km round, but am buying a property if all goes to plan in 4wks,and it will be 100km round trip. 4km dirt,8km of rural, and the rest hi-way,so this is something playing with my head aswell

Re: Commuting Distance
don't use the Bandit for commuting just yet, its a weekender bike currently. The GS500 is the commuter, however next year, the GS500 will probably be sold off and a new weekender will be bought and the Bandit will become week day bike. Either way, my commute is between 35 and 55kms return each day depending on route and things that have to be done. I work on about $15 of fuel for the GS500, probably going to just over $20 for the Bandit (as long as I keep the right wrist in check ).

Re: Commuting Distance
Mine's 10kms there and another 10kms back. I ride as much as possible as there is free parking for bikes (as opposed to $9.00 per day for cars).

Re: Commuting Distance
personally..i`ll never get a cruiser, but will be looking at a second bike to share the load of distance that I will be doing.
I`ve now got 151700 on it,and doing 500kms a week will kill it alot quicker than I want, although I will be taking it off the road within a year to perform surgery at the highest degree, when rebuilt,I still don`t want to be doing those sort of K`s on it.
What ever I get,it will be nothing less than 1000cc,so as to eat up K`s..and an excuse to buy another bike.
I`ve always run bridgies on the back, and have 023`s on it now,and usually get 17-20 000K`s out of them.
Also want to start changing my own tyres to cut costs where ever I can

Thanks. I have no concern about wearing the Bandit out
Just the overall cost of getting to work on it.
I'll probably do a mix of car and bike.
Bridgies you say.........
Re: Commuting Distance
I'd be taking a cruiser for a long ride first before buying one , they don't agree with everyone's back over long distances .You will still have the wear & tear issue but maybe something with smaller cheaper tires eg an older 500 or something & when the bike wears out , buy another cheap one .

Re: Commuting Distance
About 85 kms round trip, near all freeway, most days of the week. Sometimes I travel with the better half in the cage, stuff the train, public transport woud now be under great sufference, especially on this myki rubbish... very easy on the 1250 2WA, mini regular ride, gets no where near as cold as some ride in...just wear the kevlar dacks rarely needing the wets.

Re: Commuting Distance
Here you go 2WA - all you have to do is wander into Vern Graham's and offer him $3,000. Shaft drive will help keep costs down. Fuel injected. Pretty simple layout. Probably handles a bit differently to what you're used to. Looking forward to your test ride report!

Re: Commuting Distance
35kms each way, every day rain hail or shine. Often on the Beemer cos it sips fuel and is great in traffic, but I enjoy the Bandit more and its a much safer option for the shocking lane discipline people in Daaarwin have. The instant power has saved my bacon a couple of times where the Beemer would have been struggling to escape. If I couldn't ride the bike as part of my commute I'd probably just shoot myself.

Re: Commuting Distance
17-19km each way depending upon the route taken!
i ride more often than not as it means not taking the tunnels & toll route, plus i have a motorcycle pass for the bridge, so that cuts that toll down considerably.

Re: Commuting Distance
Close 2WA. 37ks each way all freeway except for the on and off ramps. Mind you, it's a nice feeling to sometimes do the naughty and take the on ramp at speed.

Re: Commuting Distance
Just short of 90kms round trip....rain, hail, or shine! Mostly fwy. Dual compound Dunlops about to get binned, PR3's up next. Wait for a report in the Tyre Feedback soon.
Its hard to decide on a dedicated commuter, a lot depends on your riding style, traffic, roads, cost of consumables etc etc. I found that by the time you do your sums, work out the ideal bike for the commute, change over costs from bike to bike - it was a case of "just use what I got"!
Just my 2c worth.

Ewok, you're a bad man
Ok so a few of us are doing similar distances. Feeling better now Thanks.
"Use what I got" SB. I will try that line tonight

Re: Commuting Distance
Around a 50km round trip. Now that the weather is starting to get warmer, I"ll be swapping between bikes, which will stop me from hitting the service interval so often on the Bandit. None of my bikes are covered by manufacturer warranty now, so servicing costs should reduce (DIY). Commuting does tend to give the Z8s a slightly flatter profile on the center, but they do last well.

146 kms round trip!! I know, I know. Used to be about 2kms each way, then I moved in with my g/f and here we are! Ah well, there had to be ONE down-side to the move, but it was my choice so mustn't grumble!
