Geat Idea for A TV Show.

Hey ! Is anyone here a TV executive or producer, or something ? I just had a GREAT idea for a TV show. "BIKE". A TV show all about motorcycles. Sort of like Top Gear but only two wheels. Would'nt it be great. I'm sure Wayne or Mick would be keen. You could see all the newest bikes, and some old ones. Riding gear, tips, interviews. Maybe even build a motorcycle from scratch on the show , week by week. Who do we pitch the idea to ? Eddie Mcguire ? Tracy Grimshaw ? Come on . Help me get this going.

There used to be a show called Bike on channel 28 ( community type tv ) . I think it was made in Qld . a while back ./ Have to agree though a motorcycle specific show would be great .

( if we did it we could test ride all the bikes )

i`m all for it..BUT..no commercial WANKERS please, give it to ABC or SBS ( i know SBS is commercial,never used to be)

That would be a great idea but wouldn't likely make prime time. Torque (1973 - 1980) recognised that nearly all people drove cars and hence would, or might, have an interest in a TV show about cars. Torque was in many ways (IMHO) much more relevant to the average motorist than Top Gear. Bike would have a lesser appeal to the populace as a whole just based on rider numbers (not passion or enthusiasm, which is probably higher percentage wise than tin top drivers). One thing the Aussie Top Gear effort highlighted was importance of getting the right presenters (Peter Wherret was right for his time and audience) - an Aussie Bike show would not want to repeat the Austrlalian Top Gear mistake of trying to imitate an overseas show. There are plenty of different types of bikes to cover all forms of bike riding (and racing) - it could be a weekly highlight in my viewing calendar (which is pretty limited despite all the additional channels). Much better than re-runs of Dad's Army and the like. I like your idea.

Wasn't a bad show despite being presented by people that didn't have the most experience in presenting.
Was certainly not a high budget show and it was obvious, but IMO it was pretty good.

I reckon a show similar to that of tork (yer, I know I can't speel) would be a good starting point. Don't copy top gear, we do not have anyone with the carisma of those presenters.

IMO single main presenter with reporters per subject ,kinda like simon townsands wonder world.
Show bikes of all types including scoots and the way out there one off customs with radial engines in em. Home viewers bikes/builds, riding gear, riding tips, insurance, maintenance etc etc.

If done right could be a good thing and well watched.

A great idea but I can't see it working on anything other than a community channel.
The average person has no interest in bikes and wouldn't watch it unless it gave away free beer just like I wouldn't watch a show about quilting. Reado would but that's another story
That makes it commercially unviable and even the ABC counts its audience.
Unfortunately the pool of riders in Aust is very small.

I like the idea though.

Cheers guys for the positive feedback. I recon there would be a wider audience than you think. Anything to do with speed draws peoples attention. For F--- sake they put shows ( and I use the term loosely ) on about some old bitch that wants to marry off her son and people watch it. Or some farmer wants to get a LIFE ! I recon that if the likes of Wayne Gardner or Mick Doohan pitched the idea up it would happen. Sorry, but it would have to be on commercial tv. Bike sponsered advertisers everywhere. They would love it too. Bike sales around the country must be going up and up with the price of fuel and the state of traffic on the roads. Mark my words. In time you will say. " That was Hammys idea ".

Producing/filming for a series is costly - apparently! I used to watch the same show as Dhula spoke of, "On Two Wheels". It was WA based and sponsored by Triumph - so most of the racing news was local (great if you lived in WA), and a lot of bike reports were on the Triumph collection. MX TV was a dirt bike based show - pretty bloody good. Both of these shows were on Foxtels community channel. I reckon there is a market for a bike show as you suggested Hammy - just gotta contact the right people, and have a lot of funds available! Anyone remember Boris from the magazine AMCN? He branched off into an online magazine (BikemeTV) that promoted a regular DVD to be sent to members on a regular basis, full off road/ride reports, bike tests, interviews etc..... I never saw a DVD. Boris did mention a few times on the website that the DVD was taking a lot longer than planned, being at the mercy of production companies, film crews, writers, editors etc.
But dont let that put you off Hammy - I'll gladly contribute if I can!

And that is one of the image issues working against bikes and getting the general public to accept bikes as a legitimate form of enviro transport.

I know people who are into cars in a big way but refuese to watch Top Gear. I love it but thats me.
At least with TG the speed element is tempered with safety devices.

Maybe a doco series like the quad bike dudes or the Long Way Down/Around could work or the planning and logistics and ride of Motorcycle Traders Dumb & Dumber exploits (no more D & D) or a doco on a Simpson Desert crossing or, or, or........................

There needs to be a hook to get none riders attention otherwise its a show about risky behaviour to most people.

You want a Hook ? Here's one for ya. A brand new scooter to give away to a lucky viewer. A shop or importer would gladely put one up for the publicity. And a scooter will attract a large cross section, ie, student, females, new bikers and old.

But make it a Chinese scooter, don't want to give away too much profit!

I have toyed with this idea for a while and have spent a fair bit of my life working with (or against) the media.

The first step is to do some solid analysis of likely audience size and build a business case from there. Shop it around production companies to make a pilot to take to the networks. It is a long and costly process bringing something to air.

Another option would be to produce it in-house and web-cast it.

I do know people with the production skills. We seem to have plenty of members with IT backgrounds.

The success of TG has little to do with cars, more their humour and style of presenting. Courting controversy always helps, how far are you prepared to go Hammy?

I like the idea though as it would be good to see advice on bikes and gear available and why it would help etc Mick doohan might finally be able to get his message out about wearing protective riding gear

An early EP must be about fuel range which Gus could present
