Re: Pets ?........
We lost a goodun last Wednesday.
7 months ago our Quarter horse mare gave birth to a very very good foal.
This was to be my wife's last and best horse and we were going to put our own stamp on it re natural horsemanship training etc. He was pretty much perfect in every way, had a brilliant (and gentle) personality and was going to be a good solid boy. We had knocked back several offers from people wanting him. Margie had cared for him like one of our own kids and he had won our hearts. Every horsey person up here who saw him were unanimous in their summary of the pay dirt we had hit.
Last Wednesday we got a call, Moose had had a nasty accident belting around in the paddock (like foals tend to do) and hit something he hadn't seen and fractured his skull. He died within minutes and before my wife or the Vet could get to him. We were shattered.
Some people say, get over it, it's just a horse. Anyone with animals knows different. And anyone with horses knows different again.
Anyway....just thought I'd share, and thanks for listening (or reading)
Pic of Moose at 3 hours old and the other a week before his accident last week at 7 months.
The other is my daughter's pony about to nuzzle up to the Bandit. (Just thought should chuck that in to keep it bike related....)

Meet some of Gus's pets today. Friendly bunch. Some of them even performed sexual acts in front of us. I guess it's some sort of hillbilly entertainment. And yes Jimmy. It was the ducks.

Re: Pets ?........
Bill, I am so sorry to hear about your foal, he was gorgeous. I remember bawling my eyes out (I was 10) when my pony was sold, so to have one die would be devastating. Hugs to you all.
I have a Labrador, Caesar, a lab/kelpie X, Max, and three cats, TC, Jerry and Hunter, who is the youngest of them all. Yes, I am a crazy cat lady.

Cheers for that Suzy. Yes they sure win a place in the heart that's for sure. Our Vet Susannah, even sent Margie some flowers the day it happened. That blew me away to be honest. Real nice lady.SuzySuzuki wrote:Bill, I am so sorry to hear about your foal, he was gorgeous. I remember bawling my eyes out (I was 10) when my pony was sold, so to have one die would be devastating. Some people say they no longer want pets in their lives cos of the pain of losing them. I reckon the benefit of the time with us always outweighs the pain, it's just the last bit is always the toughest bit and so it sticks with us. A friend sent us this poem this arvo which was fairly relevant considering what happened. Could apply to any well loved pet I'd reckon.
The Foal
I'll lend you for a little while my grandest foal, HE said.
for you to love while he's alive and mourn when he is dead.
It may be one or twenty years, or days or months, you see,
but will you, till I take him back, take care of him for me?
He'll bring his charms to gladden you, and should his stay be brief,
you'll have treasured memories as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return,
but there are lessons taught on earth I want this foal to learn.
I've looked the wide world over In my search for teachers true.
And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes, with trust, I've chosen you.
Now will you give him total love? not think the labor vain,
nor hate me when I come here to take him back again?
I know you'll give him tenderness and love will bloom each day,
and for the happiness you've known, forever grateful stay
But should I come and call for him much sooner than you'd planned,
you'll brave the bitter grief that comes, and someday, understand.

Sorry to read of your poor foal Bill. I imagine the girls would be inconsolable. Keep your chin up through this tough time mate.

Re: Pets ?........
On a lighter note, we have a Foxy.
He had a visit to the vet yesterday, the final result is the poor little bugger looking more like a megaphone than anything at the moment!
Not a life threatening problem, it appears he had a cyst on his right flank that burst

Re: Pets ?........
When Leroy had his eye lids operated on the beginning of last year he had to have one of those trumpet things as well. Trouble was they didn't make them big enough, so they took 2 large ones and joined them together...
Needless to say , he was not impressed...

Re: Pets ?........
this isn`t mine, buy one of my brothers horses,
it freaks me out bit with its blue eyes, its friendly enough, but it just stares at you in an un-nerving manner.

Looks a bit like the father of our deceased foal. He's a Paint with a "wall eye" also. Agree they take some getting used to.

I don`t own any, but am around them all the time at my brothers place,
he`s got lots of different animals, and has had his fair share of lose .
from loosing horses through birth mishaps and lightening strikes to loosing sheep from wild dogs. These are the worst ones to deal with, as a pack of dogs have no mercy, not a pleasant sight to come across.
yeah the blue eye thing..it just sets it off cause when he doesn`t want to be patted or touched, he just stands an arm width away from you, and stares...
