I know bikes are getting smaller and more powerful but I just could not see myself doubling on a 125.
Kind of defeats the purpose of buying a small bike for mine . . .

What is this doubling thing you talk about  ? Haven't done that for 25 years . Very Happy .I'm seriously thinking about selling my Tl1000r for one .
Distance isn't a problem in Tas . ,there are no straights .

If it was me (and I appreciate that it isn't), I'd be inclined to look at a 2nd hand CB400 Honda, eg

I see a Cagiva 650 Raptor on Bike Sales for $3000

176Kg and this one come with a top box WOW!!

Just doing some finishing touches to the house then it goes on the market for a quick sale.

People have been asking me where I am moving to. I say "just a bit south of Geelong". That confuses quite a few.

Good try, Paul
I think 4/10 for your guess.
Actually I had a mate who was a BOM technician who used to do some maintenance at Cape Grim.
He never had anything very positive to say about the place.
Paul, I'll give you another guess. Hint: a bit further east.

I was just thinking about a ride some years ago from Mackay to Alice Spring then south. We stayed at Pinnaroo overnight. I guess Pinnaroo is slightly better than Cape Grim

I could cheat & say Launceston  because I read your original post about moving .................but being a smart arse , I thought Cape Grim was closer to south of Geelong ................Gotta be worth 8

Hi Paul,
Actually remembering something you read recently is very impressive "for your age".
Wait till your as old as me.
I write notes to go shopping and get to the shop and cannot find the note.
Not wanting to waste a trip I go shopping without my note.
I invariably return home with the wrong items which I already have lots of.
I guess I'm lucky I can find my way home so its not all bad.

As I said earlier, I reckon the Cagiva 650 Raptor is a very nice bike.
I wonder if there are trainer wheel mounting points for us old folk?

Not as bad as doing all the shopping and forgetting the pin you've had for over 20 years .............then having to ring your wife to find out what it is while holding up the shopping line  Embarassed   pale   Evil or Very Mad

I think the 650 may have a bit more grunt than the 125  , but horses for courses I suppose

As Gus says, there are no straight roads so a small nimble bike might be the go.
I think my expectations have changed so at age 68 I am easy to please with a little less performance.
These small modern fuel injected bikes seem to have a lot going for them and deserve a test ride.
Honda CB300 and Suzuki TU250 may be a good starting point.
All it is going to carry is me plus a small tank bag which will hold 4-5 days of clothing etc.
I guess my present concern is how they handle overtaking but this can be determined by a test ride.

I had a yamaha YZF r15 as a loan bike , and although it had enough power to hold its own at the lights & could do highway speeds , that was using pretty much all it had  ............steep hills strong winds etc all took their toll on performance  or handling .Might not bother some riders , but I think a bit more oomph and the weight that a bit bigger bike offers would be easier to live with .

Has anyone ridden a Grom? I’m tempted to buy a used one and tart it up.

Ha ha....I've been thinking the same. .
Just on the outskirts of Brisbane, we have Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious, which are linked. They are fantastic road's although heavily policed.
Quiet regularly there's a group of Grom's that do the circuit around these roads.
They look like fun.

Mate, you could park it in my Mum's garage, ride over on one of your quality steeds, and take the Grom out from there. Plenty of good road options for the Grom, then after your Grom hoon, "commute" back home on the real bike!  cheers

I'm considering one for Kaylah's 1st bike, should suit her short legs nicely whilst she gets familiar with riding in traffic

I wonder if the grom suffers from the small wheels in handling like scooters do  Question .................although I suppose you still have the bike between your legs unlike a scooter .

I want a 125 because they are fun on certain trips, when a "normal " bike would be boring . I caught up to a car the other day (on my 125 Suzuki ) he was doing  80kph . My top speed is 82 . Instead of being frustrated I was just laughing trying to keep up . I was going well till a hill appeared but got to 90 going down the other side .I was like a blurrrr ,I expect .  Probably tore the stickers off the tank . Razz
It makes way more sense than a Busa to me  for a second bike .
The other day I bought 2 wrecked gt 185 Suz  . $450 for the two . I was going to make one good one but have enough spares to build 2 I think .
Oh ,and a postie bike c110 .
I did always think my Bandit 600 was a better bike for Tas than my 1200 .

Nothing wrong with small bikes. Everything has it's place.
I always harp on about the smaller CC bike I have, and use throughout town.
Big heavy bikes in towns and cities don't make sense to me.
BUT....to each their own.

Another good option for city use or a play in some twisties is a trail bike, very nimble, often quite punchy (compared to a 125 road bike), comfy riding position. I often think back at my XL500 and regret selling it when I started to take road bikes a bit more seriously. Even on road/trail tyres I could keep up with most other bikes in the twisty stuff in the Adelaide hills, they lost me on the straights when I topped out at 120kmh
