Stay safe
I hope everyone in the flood effected areas of NSW/SE QLD are safe and well, here we are whinging about our wettest month in 18 months (65mm), some of you have had closer to 300 in 24 hours.
Our thoughts are with you.

Hopefully everyone is going OK that lives in the effected areas. We have had flooding in our area before and it is not a pleasant experience.

Yep, a bit wet (over 250mm so far and still drizzling). The creek is raging but nearly as high as in the 2011 floods. We've no real issues other than some branches down, a few road closures, and our driveway is a bit of a creek and will need a bit of post-storm work.
Thanks for all the best-wishes.

We had 220mm in 24 hours from 9am Saturday. We had 40mm from Friday evening to Saturday morning. Not sure how much we got on Sunday, but it wasn't much.
The Coffs Harbour marina copped an absolute flogging. One yacht sunck this morning, apparently it could've been saved if our slipway hadn't been closed quite a few months ago!

I feel for the owners of the houses on Sydney's Northern Beaches but who allowed them to build there in the 1st place?
It's not isolated, in Adelaide they pump sand from the Central and Northern suburban beaches back to where it drifted from at the more Southern beaches.
Nearly all of our coastal dunes have been built on and it creates whole heap of problems down the track, I'm sure the Sydney coastline has similar issues, probably even worse as their coast is exposed to the open ocean, not just a sheltered Gulf as we have here.
Do they allow them to rebuild, or do they demolish the lot and try to restore the dunes to something like they originally were?

There is likely to be a bit who-ha over insurance - I heard on the radio this morning that most residential insurance policies exclude damage from sea water.

After the heavy floods a few years ago, most of the insurance companies made flood damage an additional charge. That way they can be selective and even refuse it to those in flood prone areas

Rain may have stopped but there are currently flood evacuations for Longford and Invermay. Also the Port of Devonport is closed due to debris/hazards in the channel and loss of navigation equipment, so the Spirit of Tasmania has been cancelled for the time being.
Luckily we're safe and dry.

We hadn't heard about trouble in the Apple Isle, just Sydney, Canberra and a little bit of regional NSW and SE Qld

Some are saying it's worse than the 1929 floods.

Anyone who has been to the park at Cataract Gorge in Launceston will recognise the top photo, that foot bridge is usually 15mtrs above the water:

Well we only got about 30mm but that was enough to overflow our house tank.
I really feel for people who have suffered losses. I think I'd prefer a wildfire to a flood.

Launceston (which is 25km up stream from us) is built at the junction of the North and South Esk Rivers and the Tamar River (that runs out to the Bass Strait). During floods the Esk rivers are dumping water into the Launceston basin, however the Tamar is tidal and at high tide it flows back towards Launceston, not usually a problem with the levees and high banks, but throw in a king tide and unusual heavy rainfall over a couple of days you have the perfect storm.

I've been in bushfires and they scared the crap out of me, personally I lost nothing but the losses to others were devastating, both property, livestock and human life/on going burn treatment with major loss of life quality.
I've never been affected by flood other than having to drive a couple hundred extra km, so I don't think i'm qualified to compare them. I do think I'd rather drown in a flood that be burnt to death or worse still, have to live with the burn injuries for the rest of my life.
Nature can be cruel either way, hopefully there are no more lives lost and minimal property losses.
Re: for those in the flood effected areas ..........................
The amount of rain that has fallen is incredible, never seen water up to power cables before:
