Going to Vegas
Hi Guys,
My wife and I are heading Vegas in November to attend the Sema Automotive trade show. We are looking for information on things to do mainly around the Automotive theme, yes my wife is into cars and bikes also.
We're flying into LA and then possibly driving to Vegas, If youve been there and seen or done something special we'd love to hear about it.
Thanks,
Paul

Re: Going to Vegas
Due to the Aussie dollar we've had to scratch Route 66 of our list for our June and July trip but you could do part of it.
The drive will have to wait until next time
We're doing Melb > LA > Miami > Jamaica > Orlando (Disney World) > Chicago (for Melody's birthday and 4th July) > Dallas > LA > Syd > Melb > Reality! Should be good over 4 weeks.

30% more expensive than 18 months ago when Melody's sister announced her wedding was to be in Jamaica.
Easy come. Easy go

I'd love to be your sugar daddy mate but I'm sorry to have to tell you I'm more of an artificial sweetener Grandpa these days

Re: Going to Vegas
AU$1.00 = US$0.77 today, 18 months ago (22/10/13) AU$1.00 = US$0.97, go back to 2 years ago and it was worth just over US$1.00
It makes a massive diffence

Not a big deal if buying gear online for a few hundred but when you're talking into the many thousands its a frigging black hole.
Still I guess its a first world problem.

Re: Going to Vegas
November the weather is getting a bit ordinary in the States, probably not as wet as you have at the moment, hope all is well for you there in Sydney.
The eastern and northern states would have had there first snow by then, so if you were thinking of doing a bit of driving it's the south and west, mind you I was in Texas the week before xmas one year and that was still bloody cold. Believe me snow might look all nice and fluffy, but it gets wet and miserable very quickly when you are in it for a couple of days.
A drive up Highway 1 along the coast of California is still a good trip, we lived halfway between LA and San Fransisco for a couple of years when I was in the Army, still like going back and catching up with friends when I can afford it.
Have a great trip, don't forget they drive on the other side of the road (most of the time ).

Re: Going to Vegas
Thanks guys, I know we haven't picked the perfect time to go but the Sema show starts 6th November, a mate of mine has been at me for years to go and this year was the first time we could actually afford to go, it'll be tight with the current exchange rate but if we don't go now we probably never will.
I'm in the automotive industry and seeing whats on offer over there and possibly picking something up for the future, so looking forward to that part

Re: Going to Vegas
Living at the other end of Nevada, I have occasion from time to time to visit LV.
The weather in November will be outstanding, not too hot or cold usually, in LV.
Besides just walking around the strip and ogling the outrageous architecture and outdoor free shows, and people-watching, which is fun in itself, there are a lot of other interesting sites to see in and around the town:
#1 on my list is the Hoover Dam. Take the full tour, which will take you down into the power house, view the museum, walk in the old tunnels, etc. Good bit of history.
Old Downtown LV - see the canopy light show at night.
Red Rocks Park
Death Valley and also the Grand Canyon National Parks are pretty easy drives.
Lots of other attractions in and around LV.
Here's a couple of articles to read...

Also, you'll find that getting off the strip you can find the best values in dining, and the best odds in gambling if you do that, in so-called "locals" casinos. Those will largely have lower prices than the big strip hotels and celebrity-chef-owned restaurants, and decent-to-better food.
Having said that though, if you can afford it, try out one or two of the celebrity chef restaurants - they usually have outstanding food. Wolfgang Puck's Spago in the mall at Ceasars Palace is great!

Re: Going to Vegas
Thanks Don, that sounds like just what we're after, not into gambling at all, I work too hard for my money, we're going to the speedway for sure.
I'm in the smash repair industry as a spraypainter, hopefully the Sema show might have some new technologies to make what I do a little easier, 32 years painting cars is taking its toll

Enjoy you're trip and don't forget the 'ride' report when you get back!

Probably like most trades people , your craft is in your hands , but any new stuff is welcome if it makes life easier .
