If you haven't got a garage door facing west then this will probably be rather pointless to read. I promise that if you do not have a house/garage in this situation you will find this very un-interesting Crying or Very sad
This is a little project on my house that has changed the garage from unbearably hot to quite comfortable.
The front of my house faces due west and includes a wooden panel lift door painted dark brown.
The temperature inside the garage on summer afternoons was too uncomfortable to work in.
Using an IR thermometer gun I determined that the heat source was the door and not any walls or ceiling.
My solution was to apply insulation to the inside of the door.
The door has metal reinforcing bars about 40mm from the inside door surface so I sought insulation that would occupy this space without needing to be compressed which would degrade the insulation properties.
I found Earthwool insulation blanket R1.3 being 50mm thick with foil backing at Bunnings.
The insulation was cut into squares to fit between the door members. The door required 9.5metres @ 1200mm wide which is about 2/3 of the roll.
Project cost was $80 for the roll with about 1/3 left over.
The results were measured by sticking some 50mm square washers to the door and measuring the temperature on these washers
On an afternoon of 25C the washer behind the insulation measured 27C whilst the one stuck to the timber surface measured 42C a difference of 15C
By mid afternoon the garage inside walls measure 26C and it is quite comfortable to work in.

Here is a photo of the results.
