crystallisation in radiator Empty crystallisation in radiator

Post  talon440 Sat 30 Nov 2013, 4:49 pm

not sure if anyone else has experienced this but my radiator coolant has crystallised in the radiator which blocked about 65% of the cooling tubes causing it to run hot spewing coolant from the overflow tube and the fan running constantly, its now been fixed by local suzuki dealer but they cannot explain why, i use motul coolant and distilled water at 50/50 ratio, this has been a slow process over the last 3 mths till it came to my attention that the fan was constantly running even on highway use,
regards Andrew

I googled and came up with a few hits.
Not with bikes but principals will be the same.
Example here http://www.iwsti.com/forums/built-motor-discussion/161473-coolant-crystallizing-hardening.html
I'd suggest you had a couple of different coolants circulating and they haven't gotten along all that well.
I hope your system has been flushed.

I was going to suggest the same, two different types of coolant together.

crystallisation in radiator Empty RE: crystallisation

So what's the fix other than a simple flush process is there also a chemical required to de crystallise / descale the cooling system in general and if so can this be a DIY thing and what brand of product should one Bandit rider shoot for ?

Cheers

Hi Al, radiator was sent to a radiator repair shop and they had to flush it with a chemical 5 times to get it all out, so the suzuki shop said

I hope the shop flushed the bike too and replaced the thermostat.

Not trying to scare you mate but if it wasn't flushed the crap in the engine will be in the new radiator by now.

thanks for that, after picking my bike up and talking to mechanic he has removed the water pump and flushed it out then flushed out the whole motor before he refitted the radiator, he also metioned when he connects the suzuki diagnostic machine it reads engine temp so he  is able to tell  the temp when the fan cuts in and also when it cuts out, so suzuki are capable of fitting a temp gauge to the bike as the wiring is all there

I think you will find the temp info your mechanic refered to is part of the OBD-2 diagnostics, so yes, technically it's "wired" but it isn't as simple as pluging in a temp gauge.
