gxr 1000 07-08 shock fitment to a bandit
Shock arrived from the states in 2 weeks (e-bay) at a total cost $130 .Shock was $50 rest
del . cost .
Looked as good as new , I think it nearly was ,no marks or adjustment screw burring .
Fitted straight in(non ABS ) looked like it was made for it .
With standard dog bones back end was 25 mm LOWER than standard due to the different
length of the gxr shock .
I cut the standard dog bones in half and ground off 5mm (center) , then got them welded back together. THe total length of the bones (not eye to eye )needs to be 208 mm
Standard is 213 mm
This makes the bandit the standard height with a gsx 1000 shock fitted .
My old shock had 55,000 kls on it and was giving me a rough ride not soft as I was expecting.
Total cost was $150 . Bargain.
Difficulty 1\10
0\10 if you remember the overall length of the dog bones needs to be 208 mm.
Cutting the bones in half and re welding was WAY more easier than re drilling holes.
I have done it that way but never again

gus...just a word of concern, as a boilermaker, for me common practice is full pen weld,
were they full pen welds with preps done on each piece and back ground to insure full penetration, or just butted together and welded
I`m by no means trying to undermine you or who ever did it, just would like to know if it was done right, especially if the weld has been ground flat to hide the join.

For the price of a couple of correct length dogbones I think you would travel with a lot more ease of mind.

Photos or it never happened Gus
Glad it worked for you. I found out the hard way that they wont fit an ABS equipped Bandit, will have ot fork out the coin for something decent soon.

A rear shock change has to be a good move, so some more info on why the replacement is better please Gus.

Re: gxr 1000 07-08 shock fitment to a bandit
When I put the GSXR1000 rear on my '06 1200 I instantly noticed a feeling of better contact in the rear. More planted. Very stable. More adjustment. If your into that. Mind you, I had had quite a bit done to the front end as well. No good doing one without the other. Kinda like a woman getting a boob job but still having an ugly big fat arse. Just no point. This is one of the reasons that I have grown to like the Bandits so much. Some other bikes come standard with "not so bad " suspension and stuff. To upgrade you would wonder if it was really worth the time and money. But with the Bandits. The results speak for themselves and bring a smile to ya dial when you do it yourself. "Bandit". "The bike you'll love to own and work on"

I'm inspired - I recall a previous post about a Nitron rear shock and this post of Gus' has made me commit to saving the pennies and getting one!

Re: gxr 1000 07-08 shock fitment to a bandit
No. The bike weight does not effect the spring rate. Remember , it is only effecting the rear wheel and whatever is on the seat. You ! The juicey bits are how it is built to react to all the bits of the puzzle.crimsondawn wrote:Would you need a beefier spring seeing how much heavier the bandit is compared to the gixxer?

Re: gxr 1000 07-08 shock fitment to a bandit
spring rate is typically determined by static sag.crimsondawn wrote:Would you need a beefier spring seeing how much heavier the bandit is compared to the gixxer?
after you set your sag of around 35mm, which is set by taking your measurement at full stroke, then you sit on the bike, and the end result should be 35mm difference from when your sitting on the bike.
you then check your static sag by measuring the bike on its own weight, then you sit back on the bike, and for a track bike, you want 6-10mm difference.(I know its not a track bike)
if its more then 10, to soft, if it less than 6,to hard.
for a roadbike, I wouldn`t go anymore than 13

Re: gxr 1000 07-08 shock fitment to a bandit
Heres one for sale from the guys that sold me mine. Mine was like brand new. This one looks the same.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/OEM-REAR-SHOCK-09-11-GSXR1000-NICE-GSXR-1000-back-2010-complete-/310403804590?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4845822dae#ht_1391wt_752
Even with postage it still works out a very cheap upgrade.

Hey Gus. Have you taken it for a test ride yet, and if so what was your initial thoughts on the shock ?

Re: gxr 1000 07-08 shock fitment to a bandit
Yep ,so much better though my original may have been totally shagged (55,000 kls ) I just ride the thing i'm no suspension expert .
Totally different feel over small bump ,new shock soaks them up .
I made the dog bones a lift of 25mm to put bike at standard height .I'M looking for new ones with a lift of 30mm .

Re: gxr 1000 07-08 shock fitment to a bandit
There are 30mm ones on ebay at a good price. I too found that the GSXR shock was softer over the bumps. A great investment for a Bandit.

Re: gxr 1000 07-08 shock fitment to a bandit
Send the seller an email and ask him to check the length for you. The GSXR shock is a much better qaulity unit than the Bandits stock shock. It is designed for a sports bike and to cope with hard riding. Adjustment is much easier. Just a click. You will have to wait and see what the difference in length is between your old one and a new one to determine what dogbones you will need. Some riders like to jack up the rear a little which helps the front turn in quicker. I think that is what Gus is going to do.

Re: gxr 1000 07-08 shock fitment to a bandit
I think it is every 1mm you change the dogbones, longer or shorter. It will change the height by 5mm. Or is it 4. My memories not any better CD.

Re: gxr 1000 07-08 shock fitment to a bandit
Not really... as long as it's in pretty good nick. The GSXR shocks should be fairly easy to rebuild, I rebuilt a RM80 shock and they are very similar. You just need to find a shop that can charge the bladder back up with nitrogen to the pressure that is required or it'll feel terrible.
So making sure it doesn't leak and the chrome isn't pitted is really what you need to look for. The one I bought had 6000kms on it and much the same as Gus it cost about $120 landed from the states. Super cheap suspension upgrade to be honest if you don't have ABS.

Re: gxr 1000 07-08 shock fitment to a bandit
1 mm dog bone eyes closer together = 5mm lift at rear
5 mm eyes further apart = 25 mm Drop in the tail .Ect
With the bike on the center stand can someone tell me how this measurement compares . From ground to join mark in tail ,tape will brush rear tyre .
THIS IS 1060 mm
