Great Cycle Challenge (2013, 2014, 2015) and now 2016

Post  Chook on Thu 19 Sep 2013, 7:51 pm

First topic message reminder :

NOTE: Title edited from 2013 to 2014 to 2015 to 2016

Great Cycle Challenge

As well as my passion for motorcycling and riding my Bandit nearly daily I also ride my push bike daily. About 10 months ago after a kick up the bum from my GP  I dusted off my old mountain bike and started riding to get fitter and lose some weight, since Dec I've done just under 7000km on it.

When I saw this advertised I thought it suited me as I am clocking up plenty of KM's, but on my old bike I'm too slow to compete directly with other cyclists, this way I can keep a bit fitter, do it at my pace and hopefully make a difference to a great cause at the same time.

This October, I am riding in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!
I will be pedalling for 31 days and my goal is to ride 600km throughout the month. (I'm hoping to raise at least $500, if I can get  to $1000 I'll bust my butt and try and do 1000km  instead)

Why am I doing this? Because cancer is the largest killer of children from disease in Australia - 3 children die of cancer every week.
It will tough, but nothing compared to what these kids face every day as they battle this terrible disease.
Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

And so I am taking on this personal challenge to raise funds to fight kids' cancer and give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

But I need your help.
Please sponsor me to support my challenge and help these kids.
Any amount would be greatly appreciated, no matter how big or small.
To make a donation, simply view my page by clicking on the link below:

http://www.greatcyclechallenge.com.au/Riders/IanButton

All funds raised will support Children's Medical Research Institute to continue its work to develop treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Thank you

Chook (Ian)

It's that time of year again, I killed my old mountain bike last October and have only pedalled about 10 or 20km since then, last Saturday I ordered my new bike (should be here within a week) Registrations opened up Monday so this morning I re registered to do the 2016 Great Cycle Challenge.

All proceeds raised go towards fighting childhood cancer research, I haven't personally known any children with cancer but knowing how devastating it is to adults, I can only begin to imagine what children and their families go through when one is suffering.

This year I'd like to dedicate the ride to My Father and my Partners Uncle that were both taken in their 50's with brain cancer and to a mate who'd just made 50 that lost his battle a few month's back, Tony suffered for over a year and succumbed to cancer taking over pretty much everyone of his internal organs in a short space of time

Please have a look at my page and if anyone can afford to give anything, no matter how small, please do, it all counts.
Donations $2 and over are tax deductible

My pleasure mate! I'm tempted to join you given the death of a five year old at our school just a couple of months ago. Stay safe and enjoy the pedalling.

Still over a month out from when I start pedalling seriously for a month, sponsorship is going great, up to $895 already so I've bumped up my targets, I'm aiming for 1000km / $1500 now

Re: Great Cycle Challenge (2013, 2014, 2015) and now 2016

Post  Chook on Mon 03 Oct 2016, 12:55 pm

So far this year I've raised $1115, thatnk's to those on here that have helped with that, it's been awesome.

Riding started Saturday and I'd only pedalled about 200km since the ride at the end of October 2015 so I'm the least prepared I've been in the 4 challenges.
I got up early Saturday morning and kicked off the 2016 event with a 41km return ride to the old Toll Gate at Glen Osmond (bottom of the SE Freeway coming in from Melbourne etc.), for those that remember the old road into Adelaide, the elevation is 1/2 way to the old Iconic Service Station and former Pub location, Eagle on The Hill. Later that morning I backed it up with a 5.5 km ride to check out the water levels of the flooded River Torrens before I headed out to destroy some brain cells while watching the AFL GF

Yesterday I was a bit slow in the morning after 10 1/2 hours of too many Super Drys and way too much BBQ, later in the morning I decided to force myself to sweat it out, I did a 4.5 km ride to the gym before punishing  myself for the previous day for a hour, then a 5.5 km ride back home. Late afternoon I was feeling much better so headed of on what I hoped would be a 45-50km ride, about 30 km in the weather turned and it started to rain so I made a beeline for home falling short of my target but still managing 32.5km.
Later last evening when it was obvious the rain wasn't going away I headed back to the Gym and used the other option available for this fundraiser, 21km on a spin cycle, that took me to 108 for the 1st 2 days.

This morning I woke to thunder storms, torrential rain and a bit of hail, the rain didn't ease off at all for the next 1 1/2 hours so I headed back to the Gym for another 40km on the spin cycle (not my prefered way to clock up the km but it's better than getting soaked and freezing). I've managed to pedai 148.6km in the 1st 3 days, hopefully the weather clears this afternoon so I can get back on my bike and do some "real" riding to get past the 150km mark.

I'm doing around  20km rides and that's enough. The wife took me to a spin bike class last week and nearly killed me. Well the seat did anyhow. I'm not a fan of them, and smashed me on it. On the road or trail though she can't keep up.

BTW well done chook

I'm not a fan of "indoor cycling" either, much prefer to ride a real bike outside. This morning it was still raining in Adelaide so instead of a morning road ride it was back to the gym again, thankfully the weather is starting to look promising for a few days

1/2 way through the month and I've managed to ride 513km and raised $1165, I'm pretty confident I'll get to to 1000km mark in the next 16 days, I'm taking my treadly away with me when I go bush for work next week, the following week I'm on leave so I should do well over 1000.
Since the start of October I've only managed to get 1 new sponsor so I'm not sure if I'll make my $1500 target, I do have a pledge for 10c/km so that should be at least another $100 after the month is done

Double Sponsorship Day - Today, 19/10/16

Post  Chook on Wed 19 Oct 2016, 6:36 am

Nearly 650km done and $1200 raised, thank's to everyone on here who has contributed to this great cause. I'm away for work this week and managed to get a work car big enough to get my bike in, I've been pounding the pavement in Riverland sunshine while Adelaide has had showers, off to York Peninsula later today for the rest of the week so hopefully the weather holds up ok.

If anyone else was thinking of digging deep, today would be the day, it's double sponsorship day, your donations will be matched dollar for dollar by corporate sponsors (all credited to the riders fundraising tally)

Donations are Tax deductible ($2 and over),
