Do you reckon there is any truth in the old tale:

You shouldn't stand on the left footpeg when climbing onto your bike with the sidestand down, as it over-stresses the sidestand?

Thanks,

GG

Yep I do, I get on the bike without standing on the footpeg.

I used to stand on the foot peg on my old KLR 600 with the sidestand down to get on, but I had a sidestand snap on me, landed flat on me face, lucky I had me helmet on though.

Well personally I would never do it cos the bandit ain't that big, actually I wouldn't do it on my KLR and that is a tall bike....

however that said surely the stand should be engineered to take more weight than "just"the bike.... seems a bit dangerous otherwise

Most side stands are designed to take a fair bit of weight.........unless it is a late 80's to mid 90's Guzzi! Then it's for looks only!!
Seen the side stand on a pre-evo Harley with starting issues??

Yes, I've seen that Rick.  A really neat and skilful trick. I would never attempt myself.

Maybe the old tale re not standing on the sidestand is getting at the risk of pushing it into soft ground.

I don't know, I've just heard it over the years.

Doing so would make getting on my Bandit with its super wide panniers a whole lot easier, that's for sure.

Put a ventura bag over the rear seat and you will use this method often ,with no ill affects .(That's standing on the peg )

Yes, just like a horse. Foot in stirrup (foot peg) swing leg over - steady - "wo boy".

Without my panniers, no problem, no need to think about standing on the foot peg. My panniers are monsters and it's pretty much impossible to swing a leg across them, and nope I'm not a midget.

Leapfrog? nope, won't work either.

So from this day forth I am going to use the foot peg as my stirrup. Sometimes you just have to take a risk...hey.

When I toured on my Aprilia I had soft luggage on the sides .The bike being tall and now wide, this was the best way to get on unless I wanted
to pull a hammy . (not that hammy )
The aprilia side stand IS a twig .
Its a question of balance ,weight over tank ,not all yippy yi ya on the left .

I've seen it done but not been there myself. The lump of RSJ thst Suzuki used on the B1250 would hold a Mack truck.
The stick on the FZ1 is another story.

As in most things a little CDF (Common Dog F**k) goes a long way.  I have owned/ridden bikes so tall (XR350R for instance) it the only way I could mount (5'9" in the old lingo) is on the sidestand, let alone kick it.  As others have said you need to assess; for instance I would not even try for an instant with the lightweight aluminium jobbie on the Kayto (300EXE), and if you do decide its on then get your weight as close to the bike as possible.  Would not have many reservations about the Bandit stand though.

Thanks very much to all bandits for comments on this one.
I have a pretty clear picture of do's and don'ts re our friend the sidestand.

Cannot trust all the time - may let you down.
Sometimes can be a 'stick in the mud'.
He is strong and you can lean on him.
He is strong enough to give you a 'leg-up'.
If he looks frail sometimes - give him some space.
Respect him and he'll probably treat you well.
He is what he is and a valuable friend.

GG
