Who can pick one up?
Who out there in Bandit land has actually picked a big Bandit up if it has fallen over (static)?
I have a 'golden rule' to obey when moving my bike around under man-power (me) which is:
thou will ALWAYS sit astride and shuffle the Bandit along, not push from the side.
So last week I broke my rule, I pushed the bike along from one side with the side stand out, brushed the stand on the floor, it tipped back a bit, I didn't notice, I let the bike go over on the stand, it retracted and down went the Bandit.
Fortunately it rested (soft landing) 90% on my SW-Motech engine bars (hurray!!) and 10% on my Hepco Pannier (ouch!).
But I had absolutely no chance of lifting it up, couldn't budge it from the resting position and it wasn't even right over - maybe 50 degrees. This is on account of being built like a lightweight!
So is there an ordinary type build bloke who has actually picked one up solo?

Re: Who can pick one up?
Same here James - I've had to pick mine up three times ( ) but never felt like I was struggling - perhaps there was some adrenalin flowing! I'm no Captain America - 188cm and about 94kgs. But I do notice the 45kg lower weight of the TRX when pushing them about the shed. I've always said that the one reason I might sell the Bandit is when I feel it is too big and heavy. Trouble is, as we've seen discussed elsewhere, there aren't that many sports-tourers that are substantially less weight and comfortable for taller riders (unless we add in the adventure-tourers).

Re: Who can pick one up?
Its not hard.
If on left hand side turn the bars all the way to the right (they probably will be anyway) and lift from the handle bars only. Just don't hoike too hard or she'll go right over.
Plenty of vids on YouTube showing how to lift bigger bikes than the Bandit.
P.S. Lift with your legs

Dropping a bike in front of a lot of people is always recommended if you intend to pick it up again. I reckon adrenaline just about doubles your lifting technique and capacity.

Agree with 2WA, there's a knack to it and as always, use legs to do the grunt work, away from the 300 thread count anyway... Whilst thankfully been a few years now since i've had a steed loose its balance, I did test my speed and strength about 12 mths ago when parking on a slight decent with the side stand, only at the last moment from the corner of the eye noticed she started to go over, damn, threw right leg under suffering only tiny scratches (on the bottom of the fairing and engine cover), knocked my leg a bit though. On the other hand, if my CBX heads over, i'm jumping clear...

I agree, no audience, but I not only picked it up I threw it over on the other side!

Does a big fat Hog count. I lifted a softtail off of a mate that was on a ride with us one time. And it was even harder because I was restraining myself from laughing out loud.

Re: Who can pick one up?
Thanks for comments bandits.
Yes, I can imagine the fallen Bandit in the car park could summons a bit more effort than in the quiet contemplation of my shed.
Actually I did get the big B up with some soft rope tied around the base of the handlebars tied to another rope and another rope then onto a chain block above my doorway (where I lift stuff off my ute). Fortunately the Bandit went down at right angles to the rope pull. My better half pulled on the chain block while I helped the Bandit arise. It came up so easily it seemed and that made me feel even more a weed!
I always tell my riding mate I only take him along to help me pick the bike up. "Nice, I enjoy your company too" he says.
I've also heard about riding only what you can pick up, but I moved on from my 185 a loooong time ago. Fortunately I've pretty much managed to get by over the years with the odd fallen bike. Thankfully these have all been static.
Many thanks again.

Re: Who can pick one up?
I have picked mine up of it's side a couple of times. Once was when it fell off the side stand, I bent the knees, held the bars and lifted, when I got it to a suitable height I held it against my hip and pushed. I've also picked it up of it's side in a 3ft deep culvert after it decided to have a little rest. I don't know how I got it back on two wheels and out of the culvert, I do know my screwed my back up doing it.

Re: Who can pick one up?
Dropping in public yes, but only because someone in the crowd can probably pick it up for me, hence the case of dropping Suzy in March. A young business guy ran over and picked it up like a pro. I left my helmet on, so embarrassed, but had no way of lifting her up. The problem was (and learned a hard lesson) was that i hadnt left it in gear, as i dismounted, it rolled an inch, and up flicked the stand, and over she went.Sloth_27 wrote:Dropping a bike in front of a lot of people is always recommended if you intend to pick it up again. Luckily I only broke her left hand mirror. Not so lucky, the Bug scooter beside me.. oops

Re: Who can pick one up?
I've done it. Not in public, no real help from adrenalin. Not THAT hard. I'm 168 cm and 80 kg. Mind the back. Lift with the legs. I know there is a backwards technique, but I didn't use it, as I could see no good grabs at the time, so it was just a straight lift, by the bars. Everyone should put their bike down at least a couple of times just to know what they are dealing with. Engine bars are a help, unless you are near upside down in a drain.

Re: Who can pick one up?
First day ride out with a mate who just got his license and I static dropped the Bandit when the engine stalled trying to slowly get up over the edge of a country road. Foot went out into a pothole so over the bike went. Now having a dicky back it did take both of us to get it up. Have watched all the videos, but none of them have people with dicky backs doing it.

Exactly! I did Postie training early last year, and even then i couldnt pick up the Honda CT110 with panniers, absolutely hopeless, yet noone could show me how to do it with my bad back.ThatOtherGuy wrote: Have watched all the videos, but none of them have people with dicky backs doing it.
Is this God's way of telling us sickies to just not bother with bikes?

Re: Who can pick one up?
I read a tip once where a policeman said if you want a lift up with a fallen bike just sit down next to it and someone come along.
It would be a long cold sit in my shed

Or get out a pack of cards and start playing Solitaire, before you know
it someone will be leaning over your shoulder to tell you to put the red 10
on the black Jack...
