Tents - what have you got?
Since my last tent fell apart after 15 years of service, Im in the market for a good 2 or 3 man (hiking/compact) tent. There seems to be a reasonable range to choose from with a large variation in price. Anyone with good/bad experiences with certain brands/styles etc??

Re: Tents - what have you got?
Depends on how much quality/weight/waterproofness/snow
shedding etc. you require. For hiking
tents I definitely recommend a double vestibule (one at each end) as this allows
you to store gear in one and enter/exit/cook in the other. I have a Macpac Citadel but @ $650 on special
it’s hard to justify unless you do some serious hiking. But hey, on day 3 of constant rain on the
1000 acre plateau and your tent is still dry its starts to get easy!

Re: Tents - what have you got?
Thanks for all the suggestions! I like the idea of a double entry , and the swag needs a bit more investigation.

Re: Tents - what have you got?
Put in "overnighter" (gus ) in seach box .Says it all really .
Swag ,mattress and sleeping bad are all in the back (orange end) bag .
Swag cost $130 with mattress although i got a small better matt .
Paid for itself in 2 nights on a 3 week trip to tasi.
Not very romantic though .

Re: Tents - what have you got?
Thanks Gus. I had considered a swag, but with some of my junior rug rats taking turns to go "camping with dad", the swag is a bit small.
.......but I do like the swag. Hmmm, better put forward a business case to the finance department and see what happens

Re: Tents - what have you got?
Its like you guys read my mind. Hubby and I want to do Tassie next January, and we were going to just 'motel/hotel/caravan cabin it, but he would also like to do a bit of camping. Now, as i have a bad back, he realises getting up from the ground, after sleeping, may be bit much for me. However.... I like the idea of swags, that way we can just roll them up and strap them on the bikes. A tent, I feel, would be a bit harder, as they have poles... hmmmm now i will have to do some research too, dammit

Re: Tents - what have you got?
Nothing wrong with Wa roads Crimsondawn. Down south where I live is nice, still not as twisty as tassie but not as cold either.
I second a swag with a good mattress, pillow and a warm sleeping bag. If its damp and wet you roll it up and occy strap it to the seat. I think my old photo from 2007 is the November calendar bike and has my swag
attached

Re: Tents - what have you got?
Strangely enough in Tassi i used to sleep in it (swag) on the motel floor (wet night ) .I also have a crook back and can't stand a saggy hotel mattress .
Dont use the foam mattress they come with (crap). Get a self inflating one .Lighter ,smaller and more comfortable .
Swags are very warm so summer can be a problem .The swag i have is a "boundary swag" from anaconda .A real nice size for a bike ,as in fits
a ventura rack .

Re: Tents - what have you got?
Coleman, Epsilon 2 (2 person tunnel type tent) Good value, plenty weather resistant, - I haven't been wet yet, in spite of it usually raining at some point in most of my uses of this tent. It's a 2 person tent which is roomy enough for ONE, I'm of a mind always to allow for an extra person in the size of the tent, then not bring them. This allows for a certain generosity of space, which is always useful.
I'd buy another one. If I had to buy another tent next week.
Lots of things about this tent have been well thought out.

Hammock perhaps?
I do most of my camping alone No tent-mate to keep me warm.
That said I swear by hammocks. I use a Hennessey Hammock here in Canada (also made in Canada) because trees are plentiful and mosquitos abundant.
Can I post a link? http://hennessyhammock.com
So you sleep pretty much flat in these because you lay in a slight diagonal. Has built-in bug netting and rain fly. Is super-compact and keeps you off the ground. I've done weeks in mine at a stretch and I sleep better than in a bed. These are a big hit with our special forces guys too.
Down side is no room for a mate and you can't really store your gear in it.

The trouble with staying in pubs is the accommodation might be cheap but the $100+ at the bar isn't

Re: Tents - what have you got?
On the swag theme, depending on your requirements a bivy bag may also work. Doing Tassie end Sept. early Oct and will be taking a bivy bag for the occasional night out, (mostly be hoteling).

Re: Tents - what have you got?
And the beds usually SAAAAAaaaaaaGGGGGG.
Yet alone when you wake up with a stranger walking through your room .(it happened)
Sleepless nights looking at the nicotine stained cealing .
Your bike being test ridden out the back buy a pissed local .
Ready for an early start to find the gate locked .Ever tried pushing a loaded bike through a pub and down the front steps at 6.am (it happened )
$25 (lucky these days)-$60 pays for a days fuel .So.
Swag it (free) and fuels free the next day .(only I can think that way )
If it raining then ok ,pub it .
Besides Clint Eastwood in "Rawhide sleep under the star's .
In fact i'm so keen on my swag i'm going to set it up with pics (ok ,who groaned) Its my swag and I shall do as I please .

Hey Baz, I don't know about you, but I know I can't afford to be on holidays 365 days a year. It takes me a year working to sort out a 4 week holiday!
