Rear Axle Nut
What is everyone using to undo the rear axle nut?
Just the standard tool that came with the bike??
I looked at Bunnings, SuperCheap and Autobarn, none of them seen to have a Wrench or socket that is 36mm

Re: Rear Axle Nut
Same here, got the black one first up along with a 3/4 to 1/2 reducer from a tool shop, then got a complete set of large impacts I think at Supercheap for about $100. The other weekend I was at the local farm markets and picked up a big set of chrome 3/4 sockets, extention bars, ratchet and sliding bar for $60.

Im with kaupy on this one, no point having it so tight that you can't undo it on the side of the road with the factory spanner

Re: Rear Axle Nut
I have a BAHCO kit seen below and the black sockets fit the rear axle nut perfectly. Its actually handy for a lot of other stuff too.

I think I'd rather get stuck on the side of the road than ride a 1250cc motorcycle with a rear axle not tightened to spec...

Re: Rear Axle Nut
My calculations to achieve 100nm are assuming a body weight of 80Kg
Remove the nut and squirt some spray lube on the thread (replace the nut!)
Put the factory supplied spanner on the rear axle nut with the handle horizontal
Measure out 125mm from the centre of the rear axle nut and stand on the spanner at this point
Reposition the spanner as many times as necessary to achieve a situation where the nut ceases to rotate
I understand this has achieved the 100nm of torque required.
In Queensland we always do this either barefoot or wearing thongs to cause the greatest amount of injury to your foot and lower leg

I got a 36mm socket from Japan and then bought a 3/4 to 1/2 inch adapter at Bunnings since my breaker bar is 1/2 inch drive.

Carry a little pipe with you for leverage. Also if you really get stuck, you can have a choof and relax a bit.

Used this technique on Saturday when I did my Service. did not however read your post until now took the bike for a gentle 10k right and repeatedly hit the rear brake hard causing ABS to kick in from 50km slowing to 10km to ensure wheel is tight. re checked the rear wheel and no movement. I will gradually increase the speed and braking force until i am 100% happy that nothing is going to shift.

Damn, why didn't I think of that? Seems much more sensible than getting out the torque wrench...

When you are 108kg you can pretty well guarantee that the nut will be tight(probably overtight) when you use your foot on the spanner.
