smartphone apps
a rider sadly lost his life last weekend and I am led to believe from another forum, he was riding in a large group and no-one noticed him missing at lunch.
condolances to his family.

a android app is availabe free that uses the motion detector in smartphones to detect a fall and notify someone .. while I don't know if it works as intended .. I figure its worthwhile having and hope I never find out if it works well or not ... icrapple doesn't support it

Re: smartphone apps
Very sad.
Not sure of the practicality of the App though.

Re: smartphone apps
Sad news and RIP.
I guess the app would detect a rapid slowing of speed when you hit something hard kind of like airbags in a car.
When it detects this kind of event, it would automaticaly ring someone of your choice so long as you have it set up properly.
I can see the benifits but wouldn't a riding buddy system kind of thing do this also ie, person a and person b are riding buddies in a group of 400 riders and if person a notices person b hasn't arrived then he raises the alarm.

Re: smartphone apps
Large group rides can always lead to disaster. I'd rather ride in a group of less than 10, no dramas and you can easily figure out who you're waiting for. Larger groups mean frequent stops and a boring ride from my experience.
RIP to the rider... group or no group always look after number 1. No one can help you on a bike if you happen to have a brain fart.

My issue with he app is its likely to not get a signal in places you most need it.
I think its fine n theory.

Re: smartphone apps
A little bit more explained. Have loaded it to my Samsung SII and it seems to be working well. Will test it out this coming Easter weekend
http://actionxl.com/CRADAR.html
CRADAR senses when you fall, waits 30-120 seconds (whatever you set it for), and if it doesn't see you move at least 8 feet, sends a text message to one of your contacts telling them you might be hurt. This gives your contact a chance to call you to see if you're ok.
In the text message is a link to Google Maps with your GPS coordinates.
If they don't get an answer, they know exactly where you are, and have the GPS coordinates so other people can find you too.
Once a fall has been detected, your phone will start ringing and vibrating, and the counter will start.
If you move more than 8 feet, or tap the "I'm OK" button before the timer runs out, the alert will be cancelled and CRADAR will continue monitoring.
If you do not move at least 8 feet or tap the "I'm OK" button, CRADAR will send a text message to your emergency contact in the following format:
"My phone detected a fall. I may be injured. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=42.484506368637085,-76.48738503456116&ll=42.484506368637085,-76.48738503456116&z=16"
Your contact can tap the link and see your exact location in Google Maps."
I would think it goes off if you drop your phone, but if it does, you can just hit "i'm ok" before it sends off the alert. Seems like a pretty good idea if you are out riding alone.

Re: smartphone apps
There's good riding to be had in upstate NY but there were parts of Manhattan that I couldn't get a AT&T digital signal.
In fact coverage in the US is worse than here in my experience. I'll try again in Sept.
