I read a book once (quiet from the peanut gallery) called Marooned in Realtime by Vernor Vinge. The book is actually quiet a good murder mystery.

The main concept is that they discover a means of encapsulating things, from small inanimate object to people to nuclear explosions, nothing can get in or out of the bubble. Inside the bubble time stand still, outside time marches on. The bubble can last minutes, days, millions of years.

Anyway, one of the concepts was space travel, the idea was simple, explode a nuclear bomb outside your space ship, and just before it vaporises you, you turn on your bubble and the explosion sends you into space, you just go round dropping nuclear bombs everywhere, set the timer for a couple years in the Realtime future and open the bubble at your destination. Not sure on how you stop yourself being plastered into an upcoming planet, I am sure there was something about opening the bubble just in time to change direction.

Anyway a great read if you can find it.

Nerd alert off..... albino

Warp Factor 9 - "engage". Just say it with a Pattrick Stewart voice and you're away.
