Tyre life and recommendations - Page 2 Empty Tyre life and recommendations

First topic message reminder :

Just bought my Bandit 1250; it had done 2800km and the ride home took this to 4000km. The rear Dunlop 218 has a big flat spot across the tread, with only 1mm tread in the middle - so it will be a problem to transfer the rego unless I change the tyre I suspect. Front is ok but worn too.

Is this normal for the 218s? I found the tyres only had 30psi in them - I suspect this has made the wear worse.

Any recommendations for a harder wearing tyre?

thanks

Thanks 2WA - I'll use that in my planning (my Pr2's have only done ~1,000kms).

I just had the 1 year service at 5000k's and was disappointed that the rear tyre was quoted as 60% worn. I read here that I am getting good mileage?? Has anyone any experience with a harder compound tyre or does that compromise grip too much. This is my first heavy bike.

5000km for 60% worn sounds OK.
my originals only lasted 4500km - 90% commuting

The reason that your tyres are 60% worn @ 5000K is that you are riding fairly gently. The reality is that the OEM tyres are crap. I only got 5000K out of mine. Take your pick Michelin, Pirelli, Metzler, Conti ...etc all make products that will grip better and wear better.

I got around 6-7000k's out of 2 of the standard rears. got the Michelin PR2's now, still look brand new after 2000k's. not like the standard Dunlop's

I agree but still think the D218's gripped pretty good.
Can we see a pic of these tyres because they should be stuffed.

Sorry, long gone to the great tyre pile in the sky. Main gripe was their grip at low temps, like near zero. Had a couple of major sphinter clenching slides in this situation, and I could never be sure if they were warm or not.

That’s strange. I have had many more sphincter moments on cold PR2's than I ever did on the 218's. The front 218's never once let go.
Cold PR2's don’t like white lines. Once up to temp there is no difference in grip only tire life.

just replaced my front OEM Bridgestone BT021 at 12000k which I think wasn't bad enough to change but my service mechanic said they would not normally allow a bike back on the road in the condition it was in .. being the front tyre I caved in and bought a new PR2 .. I still think I have another 10000k on the rear OEM to go

+2

I love the PR2 cold, wet or hot and it's long life.
The Dunlop was good hot & shit cold. BUT it did save me at 200+ pale

Just installed an Bridgestone 023 on the front. Will give feedback soon, but it feels pretty good so far.

$275 delivered from www.jakewilson.com was way too good a price to refuse for a pair of 023's. I didn;t price them locally, but last set cost me well over $500

There is an international shipping button at the top of the page, they have a scale based on the price, looks like $65 for Reddog's order.

Australian Shipping

I have had Pr2's on for nearly 16000km and i can not fault them once. They just grip and grip and grip where the continenatals that i had on before hand would loose traction all the time.

On the sunshine coast we are fairly lucky with some of the areas we have to ride( kenilworth) and some of the corners are crazy(recommended 40km/h) most of them and me and a few mates can usually push through at 100km/h + without hesitation. (for Gus just as you are leaving bellbird towards connondale)

I will definately be buying another set

Yeah look at the international shipping stuff. 3 days to the door as stated for around $274 which included the postage.

Awesome deals. It's worth buying some and storing them in the shed as I am sure the local distributor will have a cry soon.
