Stick on tank protecters Empty Stick on tank protecters

Post  gus Wed 08 Dec 2010, 8:53 am

Every second bike i see has a stick on tank protector (back of tank). You know the ones you probably have one on your bandit.
While some look ok (that must be yours) some i see mostly on sports bikes are at best hideous(in my hon. op.)and spoil the whole look
of the bike.Smooth flowing lines of the bike with guns, knifes.barbed wire with blood tank pad? Each to there own i know, i also know
I'm an old fart but its like putting on FLAMES on a 916 Ducati. With the shape of some tanks (bandit included) do the actually
do anything?(except annoy me)

Hoping this starts some differences of opinion,I'll go down and check the back of tank for scratches. Very Happy

I have one on mine. Its plain and dark so looks ok to me Razz
Belt buckles and zips scratch!
I would have got the clear protective film if I thought I could apply it without stuffing it up Rolling Eyes

Had a black one on my 1200 but took it off with no ill effects.Just curious . Have seen people through their jacket
onto their tank.Obviously a few scratches doesnt worry them.Sold 1200 to a mate (mint) saw it 4 weeks later affraid Didnt say anything though Smile

Because I hate spending a dollar when a cent will do, I just use black contact.

Stick on tank protecters Empty Photo please!

B12mick - sounds like me money-wise, but how about a photo to show your 'black contact' in all its glory!
In fact why don't the forum members with stuck on protectors submit a photo for peer-group rating. not Masterchef maybe - but Mastermodifyer perhaps? Go for a 10!

I used to have one on my 650F. It started to lift on one corner once and me being the perfectionist that I am decided to remove the whole lot and start again. Before I managed to buy another one (it was a plain carbon fibre look one) I had a good look at why we fit these things.
Maybe on a sports/hyper sports bike with low clip ons you might spend a lot of time up against your tank when travelling at warp factor 10 trying to protect your helmet from vapourising in the heat of re-entry. Love the mental image - leading edges of bike heating up with small pieces burning off with increasing frequency with rider screaming and eyeballs flattened at the back of his/her skull. LOL. Ahem - back to it...

For me, being realistic looked at my riding style seating position. I wish I could ride those bikes in the GP position but I'm too bloody tall and my wrists give out after only a few K's on clip ons.
On a Bandit, the only part of me that touches the tank is the inside of my thighs/knees. Really a gripper pad of each side would be more practical as there are no marks on the area of my tank where the protector used to be (it was removed months ago too).
I wish my bike could go factor 10 (even factor 1 would be cool) but really I don't see the need for them IMO.
Again this is only my opinion and in reality my opinion is worth... nada. Very Happy

I actually fitted mine after I noticed scratches appearing on the back of the tank, possibly from a belt buckle or something at the bottom of the jacket. Was going to get a clear one but got sucked into a carbon-look one when I got to the shop.

Looks more prominent in this photo though - I don't even notice it anymore.

I put a clear one on as soon as I bought my bike. My leather jacket has a stud on the bottom that would have scratched the tank otherwise

Clear .That's another ok. I was a bit worried about yours Whitey with that streetfighter thing going on. Smile

Conservative lot aren't we.Maybe that's why i haven't sold any "sports protectors" yet .Do you think i should market it as
the safety AIR BAG instead? Its better looking than the Honda one.

Excuse the reflection.
Been on since day 1. I dont care what it scores Shocked
My old faithful commuting jacket has an exposed buckle that would have worn through the tank by now.
