A couple of genreal questions about tyres for the GSX1250FA?

Post  jwm on Tue 22 May 2018, 4:08 pm

I have noted that the front tyre on my GSX1250A is fairly worn and also out of shape. Is this normal with the bike having done less than 8000kms?

Yeah, I know all the stuff about tyre pressures and riding styles  etc etc but there is still a lot of life left in the rear tyre, so the front and rear are somehwat at odds with each other. Passed life experiences on an FJR, I used to get 16 -19000kms from a set of pR4's. So, even though I suspect that these are the original OEM tyres that came with the bike, now neary 7 years old, having to replace a front tyre at less than 8000kms appears a bit unusual.

Further to that situation, what do you guys recommend for for front and rear tyre pressures on the bike and what brand/make of tyre do people recommend as replacements.

(Ok, I found the thread about tyres and tyre life, so I suspect that nearly 8000km on an OEM tyre is actually 'blood good' (providing it is an original tyre). Going on the information in the thread, perhaps the rear tyre has already been replaced? I really loved the PR4's on the FJR, so I guess I'll hunt around for prices for them in the next week or so. The 'Stealer' in town quoted me $200.00 for a front Angel and about $230.00 for a PR4 when I called in last week but he's not cheap at any time).

I guess that leaves tyre pressures to be discussed?

Hi, That's all I get from front as well. A lot of right side wear . Possibly due to roundabouts. I have had original Bridgestones, Pirelli Angel GT and one other that I can't remember right now , and all have worn the same way and lasted about the same in Ks. I've been  running 39psi front and 42 rear.

Ive just come back to the fold after a 20 year absence , where then i was riding liter class sports bikes , where i would be lucky to get 4-5000 ks , so 8 k to me is a gift lol , however mine came fitted with new tires , Dunlop road smart 3's , which seem ok , i will be interested to see how long they last , as you can get a pair for $300 from the accessory supermarkets

The Bandits are generally hard on front tyres ...........some of us run 2 to 3 PSI higher than Mr Suzuki recommends in the front tyres , and find it keeps its shape better and lasts longer , without any adverse effects . Tyre manufacture preferences are as individual as what oil you use , so read the forum threads on the subject & take your pick .

Thanks guys, it's currently running BT021's. I remember running them on something, might have been a VFR750 I owned previously, from memory I wasn't a fan.
Roadsmarts? Ran them on an FJR, had great grip, both wet and dry, but again from memory the were shot at about 5000km. I think they were the first incarnation of the Roadsmarts, maybe the III's are better.

I was running 40 in the front and 42 in the rear in my GSX1250FA with PR4s. I was told to run higher than spec in the front to prevent the scalloping you get on the front tyre edges.

The bt021 is a very old tyre now . Id be replacing it asap, you'll find the bike feels like a nimble 600 with a new front installed .

I can't add anymore other than I now run slightly higher front pressure as all my fronts scalloped badly at 36psi. 8-10000 out of a front is fairly normal. Rears only last around 6000kms for me. Currently running Bridgestone t30 front and happy with it so far

Haha, I wish I was good at wheelstands @Madmax I am getting better, but it doesn't quite feel natural just yet.

It really is the torque of the Bandit that is doing it alongside my right hand when I find a nice piece of road.

Careful with the landing, the frame doesn't like a heavy landing on the 1250, I've seen 2 cracked between the frame and head stock, one of those was nearly broken off (at first glance it appeared like raked forks and longer wheel base  Laughing  )

Picked up a pair of Ventura Tail bags today, the GSX1250FA came with a Ventura rack but no bags. $50.00 the pair, seemed fair.

I also priced front tyres locally today and at this stage am probably going to go with the Michelin PR5 at $210.00. The same place wanted $245.00 for a PR 4, can't work that one out.

JWM, as you've already discovered 8k for a 1250FA isn't so bad. They get out of shape by then especially on the right side, which is due to the fact that we ride on the left side of the road. If you were in a country that drives on the right side then the left side would be worn more. I run 40/42 on my "A-Spec" GT Angels.

You should easily do better than 8000k out of PR4s.
I put a new set on before riding over to WA. 11,000k later I traded the bike. Tyres were still legal but quite obviously worn more in the centre. As you would expect with a mostly straight ride. This was loaded up as well. Typically with more normal riding and using the entire tyre I'd easily get 15,000

Fitted a Michelen PR 5 to the front wheel yesterday, actually I think they are just called a 'Road 5'. Haven't ridden the bike as yet, other than a test run around the block to check everything was in order, so can't comment as yet.
Supposed to be going for a ride tomorrow with a couple of mates, so hopefully will know more after then. Although the weather is looking pretty wicked down here on the south coast at the moment.

Any comment on the Road 5?
It will take a lot to get me off Roadsmarts now but I’m curious.

No 2wheelsagain, it hasn't stopped raining down here for the last 8 days. No, I tell a lie, it didn't rain yesterday but I spent the day putting one of my car back together. The bike hasn't moved out of the garage since the PR 5 went on it..
A mate runs the PR 5's on his FJR and swears by them. I ran the Roadsmarts when they first came out and thought they were a great tyre but the longevity wasn't very good.
