1st day after the IFOS, Putty Rd and Nabiac, 2 off the bucket list.
Monday after the International Festival of Speed was a day I ticked 2 off the bucket list, Putty Rd and the National Motorcycle Museum at Nabiac.
I was packed and ready by just after 5:30, sunrise was about 6:30 so I left the house headed for the Putty Rd. It was pretty foggy so I figured I'd be riding through the suburbs, if it was too bad before I got out into the bush I'd pull up for a coffee break 'till it cleared. Following my trusty GPS I came to a intersection where I was meant to turn left, Police, Ambos and other emergency services everywhere, the road I was meant to take was blocked, there was a truck across the road with someone being lifted and moved in a body bag, not the ideal start to the day. The detour ended up taking me all the way over to the intersection of the M7 and Richmond Rd, could have saved plenty of time taking the M7 from the start of my trip.
I stopped in Richmond for a quick coffee then headed off up the Putty. It was still foggy but visibility was well over 200m, after 1/2 hr or so the fog had completely cleared.
About 1 1/2 - 2 hours in I rolled into the Grey Gums International Cafe for breakfast, bumped into a Dad/Son duo riding back to Brisbane after the Festival of Speed and had breakfast with them.
Grey Gums Cafe, Putty Rd
After the Grey Gums, back on the bike, finish the Putty, which is a very good ride but I don't think it lived up to my expectations, not sure if I expected too much or if it's rated so "highly" because it's a stones throw from Sydney, IMHO, the Oxley is heaps better (more about that later) and so is Bylong Valley Way
After Singleton I set my GPS for Dungog, refuel in East Gresford, stopped at Dungog to reset the GPS for the Nabiac Museum thinking it would take me through Gloucester (my bad, should have set it as a via point) but it didn't.
The route in the map above is to the best of my recollection, I wasn't disappointed, I rode some of the tightest twisties and climbed some of the tallest mountains I rode on for the whole trip. At the end of Stroud Hill Rd I turned R onto Buckets Way, I think I was meant to go left there.
I rode into Stroud, I'm pretty sure I turned Left out of town but it's from there to where I met the Pacific Hwy I'm not 100% about, I just know it was tighjt and twistie and in places the roads were very narrow and quite rough
National Motorbike Museum, Nabiac
After a couple hours (probably not enough) at the Museum I headed for the Aquatic Motor Inn in Taree where I had already booked into a $60 ensuite motel room (see my review in the NSW bike friendly places to see thread https://nswbandits.forumotion.net/t5550-new-south-wales-bike-friendly-accommadation )
$10 with a Middy at the Manning River Hotel next door to the Motel

If you had turned left at Stroud, it would have taken you through Gloucester and on to the better half on The Buckets Way. Finally to Nabiac.
Unfortunately, you took the heavily used and correspondingly rough half of The Buckets Way. Still a nice ride.
Motor museum is well worth the rough ride.

Sounds like you did the section Booral to Bulahdelah not bad but as you say rough in places.
Sounds like you had a great trip Chook, yes Putty is over-hyped.

The Putty is still on my bucket list. Wish I'd had the time to come some of the way with you. But sometimes you've just gotta go back to work

Where you do do it, keep going, do Bucket, Oxley and Waterfall as well, reckon you'll rate Putty 4thmadmax wrote:The Putty is still on my bucket list. Wish I'd had the time to come some of the way with you. But sometimes you've just gotta go back to work

I've just discovered Google Maps "Timeline"
I've gone back to Monday March 27th and it shows me pretty accurately where I went all day
Bosco & Recycled, this is the route I took, some planned, some not, from Singleton to Nabiac,
Part 1, Singleton to Gresford
Part 2, Gresford to Stroud
Part 3, Stroud to Nabiac
IIRC, I should have turned left before Stroud and headed through the hills all the way to Nabiac via Gloucester on the Buckets Way, instead I went right and went through Booral, Crawford River, joining the Pacific Hwy at Buladelah

That's right Chook but the way you went isn't all bad except a bit more Pacific Hwy.
My brother and I did most of that in a loop a few weeks back, came up through Maitland then via Lambs Valley Way to Gresford then across to Stroud the way you went, had lunch at the Pub in Stroud then came back by way of Booral and Clarence Town.
Good discovery with the maps, see Big Brother does know where you are.

Did my Infantry training in Singleton. We lost a few blokes on the Putty Road coming back from leave. Combination of time pressure not to be AWOL, hangover and fatigue. Was fun watching some of them that made it back on the machine gun range Monday mornings.

Speaking of the Military and the Putty Road, some of you may find this interesting.
