"Tour of Tassie", late 2018, who would be interested?

Post  Chook on Sun 24 Sep 2017, 11:19 am

First topic message reminder :

.....and when would suit?

I'm keen, would love to do a ride down their, catch up with Barry and Gus in their part of this great country.

It would be great to get enough interest from enough different locations to have a true National Meet again

Needs to be after winter, probably early summer.

For me if we could do it after Uni finishes Kaylah (Dancing Pillion) could keep my pillion seat warm again, that would be first/second week in December

I'm keen to hear (read) others ideas

I haven't had a chance to have a read yet but it was waiting for me when I got home

2 books + a wall atlas for $38 delivered is bloody good value imho

There are some good rides down south and on the west coast, I'd suggest two nights up north (or one at Launie and one on tne east coast), 3 Hobart, and 2 or 3 on the north west, doing Queenstown, Strahan and Cradle Mountain in this last section.

Most roads are pretty good in Tassie, however if its a C road, there more than likely will be gravel, no centre markings and few if any advisory speed signs, tbough plenty of native fauna.

We've just legalised lane filtering, that should be handy for the 0.5% of multilane roads we have.  Got that 1.5m bicycle  clearance zone here as well, but most bikes are permanently stationary at coffee shops so not too bad. Did come across a gaggle of penny-farthings out in the middle of no where once.

I'm thinking House for any multi night stays, pub/motel for any single nights

Air BNB in Hobart

8 guests, bed each, on the beach, 10 minutes to Hobart under $1200 for 3 nights

https://www.airbnb.com.au/rooms/7978889?check_in=2018-12-08&guests=8&adults=8&check_out=2018-12-11

or this one with 10 beds, $1425 for 3 nights

Just cbecked those prices with the chap that runs the NetRiders Tassie tours, they're on par with what he pays at Blackmans Bay (15 minutes south of Hobart) considering you are booming in peak season.

Further away from the city would be cheaper, but if you can get the numbers (10), then $140 for 3 nights accommodation is pretty good.

Just to get a bit of a idea Barry,  perhaps something like this?

Is there anything here that wouldn't work?
What could be done better?

Day 1, arrive in Devonport, ride to Hillwood for morning tea then  Launceston via _________ ????

Day 2 Launceston to Triabunna (just a suggestion) via (?? Upper Esk, St Marys ??) 10 beds in B&B for $465

Day 3 Triabunna to Hobart via Port Arthur (+ anywhere else before or after that)

Day 4 Day trip TBA

Day 5 Day trip TBA

Day 6 Hobart to either Queenstown or Strahan (choice of a few different routes)

Day 7 Strahan/Queenstown to Somewhere up to top of West Coast

Day 8 to Devonport via Cradle Mountain

Would we need to put a rest day in at Hobart (or a casual look around Hobart day) ?

Myself, #tag and JimColeman have a couple of friends who are currently in Tassie riding with a group. When the return, I'll catch up with them and ask if there was one or two roads that stood out from the rest, ie the MUST DO roads (in their opinion). I'll report back, unless they just say "Everything was good".

Either, it is pretty much what Mike and I did on our rest day.
Those sort of finer details can be worked out at the time.

People might find this interesting. We won't be able to ride here on the trip as it is a backpack/bushwalk in the remote south-west, or just on the fringe of it. There are some great 360 degree google earth pics to be had on google maps. First, call up this route:

https://goo.gl/maps/dXc4er5ZCN72

Then drag the little yellow bloke in the bottom right of the screen onto the map, holding down the mouse button. Eight photo sphere dots will appear. Position the yellow guy over one of the dots and when the thumbnail image appears, release the mouse button, putting you into street view. Do a full 360 degree rotation for each photo sphere dot to see the impressive images of the rugged tracks around Mt Anne. The old volcanic plug, called Lots Wife, is quite impressive.

Hope all that makes sense.

Why am I telling you this? Because myself and a couple of mates walked to the top of Mt Anne way back in 1980. It was bloody spectacular, as I'm sure you'll agree from the above 'virtual tour'.

It looks like it depends on what you want and how much you want to spend

$39 will get you a bed in a 6 person mixed dorm
$69 a single basic room with shared facilities
$95 a twin or a double basic room / shared facilities
$129 a double ensuite
$139 a Queen ensuite
$149 a deluxe double ensuite
$169 a spa suite

It could be a good location for the 2nd night after Hobart/night before boarding the boat

An average pub is now $85 - $110 a night in Tasi . Long gone are the $35 a night . I just bought a new swag the other day . $200 with an inflatable mattress . I used it the other night ( Mole Creek ) The pub was $85 for a room . Out the back next to a trout stream (yes ,you could see them )
FREE .
That gives me $85 for fuel the next day and a good meal .Your not doing big miles down here , you can ,but no point . We just did ,Cygnet ,Hobart , Queenstown ,Cradle mountain . Mole Creek . 550 kls .   Should have done it in two days ,( no straights )
Some days you may do 20 kls  . ( mountain top to the beach )
I have 3 sheds , swags on the floor and its free .( have spare 2 single one double bed in them )

around $50 ea a night will get you a Air bnb house in Launceston or Hobart

I'd be happy to go in the $39 dorm room or split the cost of a $95 twin at the Waratah, others wouldn't but at least that gives you the option to do either

2-300km a day is only $20-$25 a day in fuel
