Advise on installing heated grips Empty Advise on installing heated grips

Post  Trucktoe Sat 08 Apr 2017, 11:24 am

Hi Folks

I looking to buy some Oxford heated grips and I would appreciate any insights as to how difficult and time consuming a job installing them myself might be. I have been told by a  retailer in Sydney that to have them installed is about 2 hours labour and at the labour rates of motorcycle shops in Sydney that equates to about $200 - $250 on top of the grips themselves. Any advice or traps with doing a self installation would be appreciated.

In the headlight going to the park light there is a brown (power ) and black (earth ) wire . They have a plug on the end and may or not be connected to a park light .
Use that for power to grips as it is only activated with ignition ON .
Rest should be straight forward.
I doubt latest model is different .

I can recall using it perhaps 2 or 3 times in the past 26 years, certainly wouldn't miss it

You can run them with an inline fuse direct to the battery. They have a built in time out function so it doesn't matter at all they they aren't wired throug ignition

Awesome investment if you ride regularly in winter.
I always thought that they were for pussies. But, after buying a bike with them already installed, I installed a set on another bike straight away.
Oxford are high quality with good instructions.
From memory, the only issue I had on 1250 Bandit, was having to trim ribs off throttle tube to allow fitment.
Amazing how hot they get, too. I thought that I would never ever need 100% setting, but have used and enjoyed it a few times.
Highly recommended.

Boscoe15 I had the same perception of them until I owned a BMW that had heated grips as standard.  I used to refer to the switch as "the little button of pleasure".

I will be putting a set of OXFORD grips on my 1250 bandit very shortly.  Its funny, most of the riders who sh1tcan heated grips only ride when its warm and sunny .... go figure

Only once in the first month and that was by accident. Luckily someone bailed me up and pointed it out, otherwise I would have been walking out of work to a flat battery Sad

I read on some of the British forums, (obviously they use them a lot over there) that they still cause flat batteries.

I can highly recommend getting rid of the Oxford controller and getting one of these instead. Not cheap, but well worth it

Trucktoe, I installed a no-name brand heated grip set on my last two bikes and they've never caused any issue. They work great on those cold days.
Wired through a relay and only has power when ignition is on because I connected it through the rear parking light.
All up.....less than $25 fitted!!!

The new gen oxford controllers can go direct to the battery. Used them for a couple of years with no problem.

Advise on installing heated grips Empty Thanks to all for the input but..........!!!!

Post  Trucktoe Sat 22 Apr 2017, 9:51 am

Thanks to you all for your input but circumstances have overtaken the grips installation with me coming off my much loved 1250FA and it being written off! I at least got away reasonably well with some broken ribs, sprained wrist and ligaments and a terribly bruised ego which is taking the longest to fix!

I am now buying a 2012 Kwaka Versys 1K affraid and I am hoping that this will help repair my damaged ego somewhat! Embarassed

I look forward to any derogatory comments! Rolling Eyes

Glad to hear your ok Trucktoe.
No derogatory comments from me, I was sizing up a Triumph Tiger Explorer at a shop in Sydney a few weeks ago.
