No spark issue Empty No spark issue

Post  Banditnewb Mon 09 Jan 2017, 9:33 pm

Hi everyone, got my first bike on the weekend it was a steal i couldnt say no. Only problem is it has been sitting for about 5-6 years. So ive just done what i would do to a car. Flush coolant, drain oil check plugs etc etc. Ive turned it over to try fire it up it cranks but no go. Im pretty sure i have no spark as ive pulled a plug and tried to see if it arcs while i crank it but nothing. Ive checked the coils with a multimeter (im not very experienced when it comes to electric side of things) they read about 1.8-2v with ign on is this right? Any other ideas? Bike is a 93 gsf250 if you havemt seen my intro post. Thanks for any help.

Check pick up pulsar coil under lower rhs lower cover . There will be either one or two of them (opposite each other )
Would pay to put in your avatar what area you are from . Very Happy
Try checking spark at night time with lights out and with a plug you know works .

Is that the cover on the side of the engine inline with the crank?
I pulled the carbs and sprayed wd40 around the ignition checked the spark with one of the plugs i have out of the head to check and it was sparking quite well put it all back together kicked it over and it started for 1-2sec then died and wouldnt start again. Now i pulled the plug again and no spark yet again... Im running out of ideas im thinkings its a bad ground somewhere but i cant find anything suspect.

Ok update ive fixed the spark issue. It was me trying to start it off an old car battery i had charged up it would spark well when fresh but as the voltage dropped i dont think it was enough to send spark through.
But the problem i have now is i cant get it to start. I hook up the tank and the exhaust starts puffing small amount of black smoke but it does nothing. One thing it does do though a few secs after you stop cranking it pops and shoots a flame out the exhaust. Is it pushing too much fuel i to the cylinder?
Jusy want to get this thing running now haha driving me crazy.

A Battery alone may not be enough . Jumper leads to a running car is the go .

Spent this arvo pulling the carbs and cleaning they were filthy 2 were worse than the others, flushed the tank again make sure all the crap was out of it and put fresh 98 fuel in along with an inline filter. Turned it over yet again and nothing got it to splutter abit a few times but it wouldnt start.
Whats psi are the cylinders spose to push on a comp test? Thats the next thing ill be doing i think..

I done float height when i cleaned the carbs. Got new plugs but i havent put them in yet the old ones are still sparking fine. Have also tried spraying carb cleaner into the carbs directly started to splutter but wouldnt run.

Today i put brand new plugs in and went to start it. With the choke on it sounded close to starting but wouldnt and now it has started backfiring out of the 2nd carb. Im running out of ideas, timing? Appreciate the help.

When you were checking spark, you couldn't have mixed up the plug leads?

If it's backfiring you have a timing issue or the plugs in the wrong firing order. Check the manual to verify the correct order and go from there.

I think you could be right about the plugs now i think about it i think 1 and 2 are the wrobg way around ill confirm after work this arvo. Workibg tired on your bike is a bad idea haha.
Just a quick question is it on to start the bike straight off the carbs without the airbox? It should be ok shouldnt it?

no air box is fine . Check needle and seats . If it hasn't been started for that long I would be surprised they have survived . One cylinder could be flooding .

Didn't we have a dude with a 250 on here who gave up trying to get it started about 12 months ago?
