starter motor - Starter Motor Failure Empty Starter Motor Failure

Post  whitey1 Tue 06 Dec 2016, 10:09 pm

Hi everyone,
It's been a long time since I've posted but I'm still alive!

My starter motor started getting sluggish lately, so I thought the battery wasn't getting charged properly. Not really surprising as I've hardly been riding the old girl this last year(still only got 15000km on the clock). So I put the battery on charge for a couple of days, hooked it back up and...................barely turned over! Lights were bright so figured it wasn't the battery.
After a little googling I came to the conclusion that the starter may have thrown its magnets, so I pulled it out today and yes, 4 of the magnets have dislodged from the casing.
I'm in luck though, none of them are damaged so hopefully I can just glue them back in.
So, what's the best glue to use?

Old fashioned araldite would do the trick as well.

Well I took it to work today and used a two part glue that we use to glue quarter panels and roof turrets on with.
It's called Fusor Panelbond and sticks like a weld!
Hopefully it works on starter motors.
Tip for newbys , label the magnets before pulling them out. there are 2 different types . I managed to work it out which ones go where.

2007 for the 2008 model year and bang on 15,000km I think. A search here will bring it up.
Get a starter from the wreckers Whitie. Plain old chewie or Araldite wont cut the mustard. The magnets are bloody strong.

Easy to change starters and I paid about $200 for mine. (+$140 for a new battery as I thought that was toast!)

Put it back in and it starts sweet again.

Well done whitey, hopefully the glue you've used does a better job than the original starter motor - Starter Motor Failure 959052286

Hi
Well it looks like my bike has joined the ranks of the starter motor wounded.

2015 GSX1250 FA  Brand new

It is 21 months old and has done 12600 ks

So I hear a bit of squealing on and off over the last two weeks.
Funny noises that would come and go.
Took it in on Tuesdays for it's 12000 ks warranty service...no problems.
Thursday night and it would give you one chance to turn over the bike and after that it
would click and clack and do squat.

Just dropped it back off at dealer and he first mumbled some thing about you have a front fender extender on
the bike and overheating.

So I said well if it is over heating then that is another issue you need to fix under warranty.

Was just waiting for him to try and blame it on me...wasn't going to put up with any of that shit.!!!

But he shut-up and said we will get another starter under warranty.

Lucky for me I have 3 months left on the warranty.

So no bike until next week.

Thanks
Richard

It will be interesting to see if it's a problem with the magnets or something else ..........I would have thought that by 2015 they would have sorted that issue out by now .

  Hi
That is what I would have though as well.

Hope they tell me and don't just say...we replaced it.

Hi
Got the bike back today.
Magnets in starter motor had failed.
They said that it was the glue failing because of heat.

They also said that it had happened before...well we all knew that !!!! and not just on the GSX1250 model.

The mechanic said that ,as Suzuki had a new part number for the replacement starter motors, he was a bit surprised
Suzuki hadn't done a recall on them.

I said that because these starter motors had been failing since 2008 I was very surprised that Suzuki would have put an "old" style starter motor
in the 2015 model rather than the new part numbered starter motor.....he just shrugged his shoulders.

So there you go.

Warranty runs out in 3 months...then I will doing my own servicing.

Thanks
Richard

Joining the rank of members that only posting when they need something! - Sorry
This cold morning was my turn for starter motor problems - no real surprise for my 2001 GSF 1200s with over 90k on the clock.
Hoping it may be simple to replace so long as I can get it bump started to get it to the workshop, unless it is easy enough whip out and replace?
Not sure I want to strip it down and glue magnets though?

Moved south of Adelaide since last post so could be up for a ride as the sun returns to Adelaide?
Regards
Atholl

It all straight forward and if its not working you have nothing to loose . From memory ,two bolts remove starter motor , two bolts and you have starter motor apart .Doesn't get much easier than that .
