New Seat for my GSX
Riding around Oz last year the old bus ran beautifully but the biggest gripe I had was the seat. Doing anything from 350kms to 875kms per day my butt and back were crying out by the end of the run so the thing that I decided was to upgrade my seat to give my derriere a present.
I looked at the Sergeant and other off the shelf seats but in the end I opted for a remodel of my old slab by MJM seats in Goulburn. So off I rode the 2.5 hours down the Hume Hwy to Goulburn (a place that I have a love/hate relationship) and spent a surprisingly decent day in Goulburn while Mick did his magic. By the time I got back at the end of the day (it was pretty much took a full day to do) I had a very nice moulded seat with matching blue piping and a half tank bra. The cost is a little lighter that the off the shelf units so that is very nice but having someone look at you on the bike to ensure that the plan for the seat is the right one for the individual is on my opinion a better option.
Yes I know that you don't have two seats at the end and you might be able to recover some of the costs by selling your old one, but I am a very happy owner of a tailored MJM seat that had my backside very comfy on my trip down to and around Tasmania; so job done. (Too bad about the problem on the Bruny Island ferry which had my mate and I thrown to the deck by an out of control ferry hitting the dock, that brought our trip around Tassie to an abrupt end; but that's another story!)

Looks the part and looks comfy, too.
Are the defined areas gel inserts?
I did some research on seat recovering and arse bone gel patches was an idea that I thought was very clever.

Seat looks great. Thought of getting a tailor made option but just went with sheep skin.
Bit off topic, how have you fitted the storage tubes on your top box mount, looks like a great idea.

Hi Rodroket
These were made out of off the shelf PVC pipe fittings and a piece of aluminium rectangular box section all from Bunnings (all the parts cost me about $20.00). The fitting of them was a quite a bit of trial and error and tailoring. I measured up the box section and the spacers to go under the Givi rack and used the same mounting points as the top box mounting plate but had to buy longer bolts to secure it all. They work great and when touring I have a thermos in one and water bottle in the other and when just out riding I have my wet weather gear and water bottle.
regards,
Trucktoe

Gel Patches.

The defined areas are not gel but different density foam but yes it is a very comfortable seat and I don't seem to suffer the same fatigue that I had with the old seat. I like your idea of the gel areas, but it might be a bit of a faff to get them just right and feeling comfy, but the end result might be worth it.

Re: New Seat for my GSX
I have a custom seat as well done by MacDonald Motor Trimmers in Tauranga. I got it done in the middle of a 3000km trip, the second half was bliss by comparison! Well worth spending some $$ on a good seat I reckon.
Would you mind posting some more photos of the tube set up on your top box rack? Say with the box off and showing how the tubes are mounted? cheers

Storage Tubes- Details
Hi Guys
For those of you who have asked about the storage tubes that I have and that are shown in the pictures of my seat, I will be very happy to provide more details once I get my bike back out of the repair shop later this month. I will take some more pictures and also take measurements of the tubes and aluminum section for anyone who is interested.

Storage Tube Measurements
For those who were interested in the storage tubes I have on my bike.
These measurements are for the Givi Mono-Key baseplate that I have on my GSX/FA. Double check them for yourself and remember measure twice and cut once! I purchased all these items off the shelf from Bunnings. If you want any more details please let me know and I will try and provide them.
Extrusion - 20mm x 10mm
Length - 310mm
Tubes - 90mm x 270mm (the diameter and length of tubes are optional but increasing the diameter will alter other measurements)
Spacers x 4 - 25mm
Rear Spacer holes - 155mm
Front Spacer holes - 165mm
2 x 90mm stormwater threaded
2 x 90mm threaded screw on storm cap
2 x 90mm push on end cap
4 x brackets
bolts are M5 (I think)
