Investing in a Future Classic - Which Bike? Empty Investing in a Future Classic - Which Bike?

Post  Ewok1958 Fri 03 Apr 2015, 8:50 pm

This might or might not be a hypothetical question, but either way, you guys probably would love to proffer an opinion!  The tricky question is which bike, old, not so old, even new, is going to be a future classic, sought after by riders and collectors alike.  Lets put a limit of say, $20k, on this question, which covers a range of new bikes (but by no means any of the exotic ones) and just about all of the older bikes.  What would you buy now with this budget if your were thinking of selling in a 10 - 20 year timeframe (so think about the downside of tieing up your hard earned for that period).

I have my own opinions (of course) and already have a 1997 TRX850 and 1980 XS850 in the shed speculating on this very question.  But hey, there's room for one more!

Love to get your thoughts.  Very Happy

Ewok's nailed it reddog, he's investing in something he can ride, best of both worlds and if the investment turns to shit at least he gets value out of the rides Smile

As for speculation, I have no idea and would be the worst person to ask.

My first car was a 10/1970 build XW Futura, the last month they were build, 3.6L (221) 6, factory disc brakes, top loader 4 speed and bucket seats, bought it for $500 in 1981, sold it in '85 for $800, now unrestored, well over $10,000, restored, $15-20,000 minimum, that along with  the VG Safari Wagon,   VC Valiant & CL Valiant could have made me plenty, dont get me started on the 2 bedroom unit for under $40,000 in 1994 across the road....

I have never had any idea on what something will be worth in the future Rolling Eyes

I'm in the same boat as Chook, and I shouldn`t cry over water under the bridge, but I will. When I was young, I use to be heavily in to mazda rotarys, and now a genuine RX3 Coupe is well over $50 000, ahh but I digress....

Any way, I still want a Honda CBX 1000, or along with the rotary theme again, a Suzuki  RE5

Ducati bevels could be had at a reasonable price when I was talked out of buying a blue and silver SS, from Bikebiz Paramatta, around 1995. I think it was around $5G at the time. Worth much, much more now.

I guess you have to look at what makes up the  category,

Limited numbers....

Cult following.....

Appeal for what ever reason...

I guess if it doesn`t have some of these elements, then it just wont be

I'd say the RZ's in particullar and also the RG's are already collectable and have increased in value

As for the TL, you'll just have to hang on to it forever to find out Smile

SP1 or SP2 has attracted my attention a few times and they seem to be still appreciating.

These Ducati 916 Senna models are probably contenders but have already hit $20k and more.  Not particularly low k's either.

One of my favorites talon440. But i's a bit of a case of 20/20 hindsight going through their products as they've all become classics to one extent or other.

Theres a couple of very nice MV Augusta F4 RRs going for 20k or just under. And with only 4000ks.  You could polish one up and sit it in your Bar.  Take it outside now and then just to start it up and listen to it.

This is nice:  )%26(Model%3D[Commando 850]))%26(((((SiloType%3D[Brand new bikes available])|(SiloType%3D[Brand new bikes in stock]))|(SiloType%3D[Dealer used bikes]))|(SiloType%3D[Demo %26 near new bikes]))|(SiloType%3D[Private used bikes])))%26(Service%3D[Bikesales])&pso=0&pss=Premium]http://www.bikepoint.com.au/private/SSE-AD-3109754/1974-Norton-Commando-850?cr=1&psq=(((Make%3D%5BNorton%5D)%26(Model%3D%5BCommando%20850%5D))%26(((((SiloType%3D%5BBrand%20new%20bikes%20available%5D)%7C(SiloType%3D%5BBrand%20new%20bikes%20in%20stock%5D))%7C(SiloType%3D%5BDealer%20used%20bikes%5D))%7C(SiloType%3D%5BDemo%20%26%20near%20new%20bikes%5D))%7C(SiloType%3D%5BPrivate%20used%20bikes%5D)))%26(Service%3D%5BBikesales%5D)&pso=0&pss=Premium

Kawasaki H1 500 or H2 750 would be a fair bet to go up in price .
