SAPOL News wrote:October has been a horrific month on South Australian roads and one that we do not want to see repeated, with 18 people killed on our roads this month.
“Thirteen of these deaths have occurred on rural roads and, while it is too soon to attribute causes in most cases, the Fatal Five elements appear again and again; speeding, drug/drink driving, inattention, dangerous driving and not wearing seat belts,” says Superintendent Anthony Fioravanti, officer in charge of SA Police’s Traffic Support Branch.
“Every time anyone gets behind the wheel, on their motorbike or bicycle, they must assume responsibility for their own safe driving or riding.
“Pedestrians also need to stay alert and use approved crossings wherever they exist.”
A specific focus for police in the coming months will be the Adelaide Hills and routes generally used by motorcycle riders – Operation Safe Hills will be conducted for the next six months and will be targeting dangerous motorcycle riders in the Hills areas.
Operation Safe Hills will use a range of tactics and technology, including covert speed cameras, to focus on areas with crash and dangerous driving history.
South Australia Police will also be running three other major operations during November; Operation Distraction, Operation Belt Up and Operation Safe Passage.
“Operation Distraction will focus on drivers using mobile phones on metropolitan roads,” says Superintendent Fioravanti.
“Driving is a complex task and requires the driver’s full attention. What a lot of people don’t know or seem to forget is that a car travelling at 60 km/h is travelling at over 16 metres per second.
“Taking your eyes off the road for just one second means you have driven 16 metres – blind. A lot can happen in one second and 16 metres.
“Police are also conducting Operation Belt Up which will target seat belt compliance in rural areas. Tragically not using appropriate restraints is a contributing factor in one in six fatalities.
“A motorist can significantly increase their chance of surviving a serious crash simply by belting up – so why wouldn’t you?
“We will also be conducting Operation Safe Passage which focuses on speed on roads in rural areas. 26 per cent of all crashes on rural roads involved vehicles leaving the road out of control, which indicates speed as a probable factor.
“Slow down, abide by the speed zones and drive to the conditions, then the chances of your vehicle leaving the road out of control are significantly reduced.
“These are multi-faceted, high profile operations. No road user can say they are not aware of their responsibilities and we expect everyone to put into practise what they already know about road safety.

SA Police support Motor Accident Commission’s reminder this weekend that complacency is a killer - every driver should take responsibility for their driving behaviour, every time they drive.

Yesterday within 1/2 hour I drove past 1 on Henley Beach Rd, 1 on Sir Donald Bradman Drive and another on Marion Rd, all within 3 or 4 km of each other. At least their fleet of Camrys are pretty easy to spot Wink

I thought maybe they had been sending Vic police over here to SA as punishment for not getting enough fines over there until they prove themselves again  Razz
