'07 1250 went DEAD when I tried to start it !! Help !!

Post  captbruce on Sat 10 Oct 2015, 2:07 am

First topic message reminder :

Hello, SBA Forum.

You guys really helped me when I got a "basketcase" Bandit in Jan. 2013.
I will never forget how great you guys were to me then.

Well... I have since put on 5000 miles, and it's been trouble FREE... till this morning.

I went to start it and everything was good... Key "ON" all lights came on and I pressed the Start lever and PFSST !!
Everything went DEAD !!
Now when I turn the key nothing comes on. I mean NOTHING.
When I turn the key off the Tach bounces to WOT then returns it zero.

The Battery tests 12.7V, 30 amp Fuse checks OK; 12.7v at the fuse block terminals.
All the smaller 10-15 amp fuses check OK too.

Am I missing something ?
Is there another fuse I can't see ??

Maybe a bad Ignition switch ??

I need HELP !!

NEW Battery and everthings good !!

Post  captbruce on Thu 22 Mar 2018, 9:18 pm

I got my NEW Battery and everthings good !!
Started right up and runs good.

I was reading that one of the drawback of the GEL Battery is it goes dead with no warning or signs.
Phffft !!

I did buy another GEL but I may go back to Lead/Acid, from now on.

I can't remember how old that battery was, cause I took it off another bike-2-1/2 yrs. ago.

I'll check the charging system on the Bandit soon.

Thanks for all your help.

My Best to you all !!
Ride Safe !!

Now it won't start at all !!

Post  captbruce on Mon 30 Apr 2018, 8:51 pm

It's still been acting up even after the new battery.
Now it won't even start, and after cranking for a short time the battery goes dead.
It might be the Alternator is not putting out or maybe the Stator ?
Is there a Rectifier/Regulator ??

Usually if you touch the starter it would start instantly, and purrs, Since I got back from being away for 9 months it's running rough at start-up till a few seconds it smoothed out.
I was going to inspect the ICV, but I need the tamper-proof TORX.
I ran two tanks thru it with SEAFOAM in it thinking it might be a clogged injector.

I'll try jumping it with my truck and check to see what the alternator is doing.

Sometimes I hear a "pop" or a "pfft" as soon as I hit the starter.

It has not run right since I got back, after the bike sat for 9 months, although it did start right up but it never ran as it should.

Now I don't even want to use it fearing it will leave me stranded.

Starter cranking SLOW...

Post  captbruce on Mon 30 Apr 2018, 9:55 pm

I tested the battery at 12.9V
But the Starter is very slow cranking.
Maybe bad starter or bad battery/starter connection corroded or wiring, going bad.
Anybody have a starter go bad ??
I do use it for ALOT for "short-hop" stop and starts.

I jumped it with my truck.
Starter spun faster and it started easily, although it was running kind of rich, and missing slightly.
I smell unburned fuel at idle.
still looking for the tamper-proof TORX.

The voltage went from 12.9 to 13.5 and higher as I revved it, so I guess it's alternator is charging.
I ran a few errands with it but I never turned it off.

When I got home I shut it off and re-started it ok.
Maybe I should try a Lead-Acid Battery, instead of this AGM.
IMO this AGM doesn't seem to hold a charge.

How many Amps does the bikes charging system put out ?
10- 15 I'm guessing.

Still isn't running right when it's running.
I think I have another problem besides just the battery, or the starter.

Sitting for 9 months ??
If you haven't already, start with new fuel.
Dump the 9 month old stuff.

Has it had the regulator/rectifier replaced under recall?  Some of what you're saying is pointing me to the reg/rec (my bike puts out 13.8 volts at idle and never changes with revs). I'd replace it and I'd get a new battery.

A stuffed reg/rec could be affecting the voltage getting to the fuel pump, which would affect the running.

As an aside, I just replaced the fuel filter and pump in my bike (at 96,000kms, 1st replacement was at about half that, so now on my 3rd). They only cost $40 on eBay (about $US$30) for a Japanese made unit. I'm a fan of fuel pump replacement at around 45,000kms!  cheers

I already replaced the fuel and have run 5 tanksful through it with SEAFOAM additive thinking maybe it was an injector causing it to not run as smoothly as it always did.
I also changed the plugs.
No Help yet. still a slight miss.

The Regulator seems like it's working.
At idle it's 13.3-13.4 and when the revs go up it rises to 13.8.
The battery this morning was 13.1 after sitting all night after I used the bike yesterday.
So it took a charge from using it.
I didn't start it yet cause it's only 5:30AM, and I'm getting ready to go fishing.

When I had the tank off I did notice the K&N filter was pretty dirty.
I have a new one coming from eBay.
I did the Airbox Mod. you guys recommended, cutting the cover of the airbox.

When I got the bike it had NO AIRBOX !! just PODS on each Throttle Body, and it would not run very good AT ALL.
I forget who told me (on this Forum) it would never run right with the PODS... to get another airbox on eBay; do the airbox MOD; remove the secondary butterfly's, and when I did all that it run and idled perfect for the last 4-5 years.

Anyway...
I'm gonna have to buy another set of Tamper-proof TORX, and clean the ISCV, and see what happens.
I have a set but I can't put my hands on them. Grrrr

Oh yeah... Last year I up-graded the "Neutral switch" and the light acts like it should again.

Thanks for your help.

Emok1958, you might be RIGHT !!

Post  captbruce on Tue 01 May 2018, 10:03 pm

Ewok,
I am beginning to think you are right, about the regulator/Rectifier.

The battery was 13.0 cold but when it cranked but did not start the voltage went to 12.7, and would NOT even crank a second time.
I jumped the bike with my truck at 13.4V and it fires at the touch of the button.
I drove the bike a mile one way and back and when I got back to my house I killed the motor and it was dead again, I coasted up my driveway the voltage was 12.7 again.

I jumped the bike again and the voltage went to 13.4 at idle, but only went to 13.5 no matter how much I revved it.

With a battery that low the voltage out of the regulator should have been up to 14.5v to get any AMPS back into the battery.
So I'm gonna get one off eBay.

This is a BRAND NEW battery.
My older one is probably OK too.

Thanks, for your help

Hit up your Suzuki dealer for the regulator rectifier, The part and it's replacement should be free. Mine is on number 3, after two recalls for the same part.

I have one coming off eBay. It should be here tomorrow.

I will try my local dealer, anyway. it's 100 miles away.
That's one of the problems with living at the end of the road.
