What the future holds ??
Our newish Southern Express-way has now acquired some new neon signs telling me how long my journey will take me to get to a given destination . That's very nice I thought , someone must be driving back and forth & timing the trip for me Wrong , apparently they log onto someone's GPS & time it that way .Then I read today they plan to log onto peoples phones to track their movements around the city precinct so they can improve infrastructure .Now seeing this technology exists , how long will it be before we start to receive speeding fines in the post ( or via electronic media ) because they have worked out how long your journey has taken you & you have arrived there before you should have . Scary stuff .

Re: What the future holds ??
We were only talking about that the other day at work, those "Time to" signs are popping up all over Adelaide at the moment, if your bluetooth is on, it recognises your phone, when you pass the next one it does the same and measures the elapsed time, it then takes a average of all of the other bluetooth devices it has taken time samples from and that average is the "Time To" shown on the displaypaul wrote:Our newish Southern Express-way has now acquired some new neon signs telling me how long my journey will take me to get to a given destination . Re: What the future holds ??
Sounds far fetched to me Paul.
GPS devices are receiver's only.
Melbournes M12 Freeway has travel boards with times based on traffic movement through pre determined points. There are monitoring cameras every km or so. Not speed cameras just monitoring units.

Unlike the old cameras spaced at regular intervals you are referring to , the newer technology can recognise an individual unit ( phone ) to obtain the information . Not sure exactly how it works ,possibly through bluetooth ( although Mr Google doesn't seem to have any trouble finding me ) as Chook has just said . My lad had a tour of the traffic control place , & they were telling about how they do it .

Re: What the future holds ??
I was tracked trough every shopping centre in the US then bombarded with ads days after for similar things to what I had purchased (how many 12 inch black dildos does one need?) Note that was through the "free" open wifi. I have turned off the NFC facility on my phones because I don't like the openness of it but I can't see how I can be tracked just by BT. Ever tried connecting 2 BT devices without pairing first?
The ABC link mentions our privacy is much tighter than overseas laws. I'm not convinced it's real.
(Cops seem to know when I'm on my way home.though. I wonder if they have a need for a dildos?)

Someone just posted this link on another site which explains it a bit more ( page 7 item 2.3 )

You're all on the wrong track.
It's the fillings in your teeth that they track. But that's the old analog system.
The next G are filtering through with the chip implanted at birth.

VW tried installing some sort of tracking device in 11,000,000 cars. But all it did was screw up the emissions control data. Ooooops.

Sorry 2WA, the bluetooth technology is real, and is being used in Adelaide2wheelsagain wrote:I was tracked trough every shopping centre in the US then bombarded with ads days after for similar things to what I had purchased (how many 12 inch black dildos does one need?) DPTI-SA wrote:Almost 30 travel time signs have been activated on key arterial roads today giving motorists and truck drivers real time information on traffic flows on these roads.
As vehicles pass through major intersections, Bluetooth signals are detected by receivers on the traffic lights.
Those signals are used to calculate the average time taken to travel between two points and that information is posted on the travel time signs to inform road users of average travel times.
The times for adjacent routes are then displayed on the variable messaging signs allowing motorists to compare and assess different journey routes.
The system is already being used on the department’s Traffic SA website, which provides real-time data on congestion and heavy traffic flows.
The Bluetooth system maintained the privacy of road users because it couldn’t identify vehicles or drivers.
The activation of the travel time signs coincides with the launch of Operation Moving Traffic – a $1.7 million State Budget investment in initiatives to deliver faster and more reliable travel times for road users.
Studies show weekday travel speeds for cars and trucks slowed by more than 8 percent in the 10 years to 2014 mainly due to the more than 20 per cent increase in the number of vehicles on our roads.
Congestion hurts our economy. It adds extra cost to goods and services by increasing freight costs and it delays people who use our roads for work including tradespeople and delivery drivers.
For more information and to provide feedback go to www.dpti.sa.gov.au/movingtraffic

paul, personally I think the trails that are about to happen in SA for driverless cars is more fitting of the thread title

If you don't have blue tooth enabled to answer your phone when you're actually riding, couldn't you just turn it off to defeat the technology?

Re: What the future holds ??
as it works on averages of multiple bt enabled phones, bikes lane filtering could throw the average down a bit giving the tin tops a false sense of security

I'm not sure , but I think reading the articles there is more than one way they can track your phoneChook wrote:yes, chances are though, plenty will still leave it onEwok1958 wrote:If you don't have blue tooth enabled to answer your phone when you're actually riding, couldn't you just turn it off to defeat the technology?

Scary thought.
I never log into free WiFi, but when Bluetooth is on, shouldn't it be notifying you when another device is trying to connect?
As for those black dildos that Chris bought, how did they even KNOW you bought them to send you those ads????

Re: What the future holds ??
It doesn't connect as such, just like when you are looking to connect with another device it gives you a list of available devices, this technology recognises your device and then places it at various locations at different times.
As you can name your device what ever you want and it's not getting into your phone or device any further than that there should be no concern (yet) that it knows who you are

They can be triangulated through telephone towers.
Why do you think that mobile phones are so readily available and affordable?
Why did they get rid of the analog system, which was far better for a broad country like Aus?
Why can you not buy and operate a mobile without your details being linked to it? You used to be able to.
Who needs an Australia Card when your every living movement can be detailed through the portable tracking device that everyone voluntarily caries?
Yes. I read 1984 when i was a youth.

Take the back cover off, remove the battery, remove and destroy the sim. Place phone in front of rear wheel and drive off, then you might just be safe.
