New job means no ridding!!
Well I`ve been unemployed for 6 weeks due to redundancy from construction end of project in the LNG industry on Curtis Island off Gladstone.
I guess I`m lucky, that my supervisor was happy with my work, and asked me to go on to the next project.
With these projects, if you don`t know someone, you`ll never get on.
I shouldn`t complain, as Boilermaker jobs are slowly drying up around the nation. In Gladstone alone, many Engineering work shops have shut up, and there`s a lot of unemployed people in the town.
I guess my first world problems start with the fly in fly out thing.
The new job is in Wheatstone W.A
Fly from- Gladstone to Brisbane :1hr
Brisbane to Perth :5hr
Perth to Onslow :2.5/3hr
Then bus- Onslow to Wheatstone :1.5hr
At the moment, its a 28 and 7 roster, and the really good part, I hear it gets to 50* plus in summer at Wheatstone!!!!!!like that's going to be fun.
When I get back on my weeks off, I wont feel like doing anything, let alone ride a bike, apart from going to the shop for food.
In one way, its going to get me a head in life, in another way, I don`t know what its going to do to my sanity.
I start next week, and have really become accustomed to not working. I can`t wait to retire from work in life, as its good sitting on my arse doing nothing. 6 weeks has gone to quick, and I didn`t even get a good ride in.
Time to pack the bikes up for hibernation.
Job will go for two years, but I can`t see me surviving that long

Best of luck with the FIFO thing. My younger brother has been doing that for many years now and is as rich as a sheik! He currently works out of a mine somewhere up past Cooper Pedy, 9 days on, 5 days off. But he has worked o/s a lot including Chile, Mongolia, Borneo, and Tanzaniya. The o/s jobs were all months on then some time off. His current Cooper Pedy job even has him over in Chile at the moment setting up some mining operation. He turns 50 next year.
He rides a Ducati ST3.

Re: New job means no ridding!!
Thanks mate. I`ll be fifty next year as well.
I`ve been lucky with Gladstone over the years. For the last 10yrs, there`s been solid construction in town, and have never had to do FIFO.
Its only because a sign of the times, I now have to leave to go/find work. I guess I`ve been spoilt.
You have to do what you have to do. Got to put food in the belly, with a roof over head.

It's a pity is not down south. The sw is a lovely spot. Includes is quite nice apparently. I've never been up that far though, but have been to kalbarri in summer and it sucked due to the stinking heat. If you are here for 2 years ship one of the bikes over and head down south instead of heading home a few times.
Good luck with the new job btw

Bloody Easterners, you even spell it like you say it, it's Coober PedyEwok1958 wrote:Best of luck with the FIFO thing. Is he above (North) ? or one of the 2 large mine sites South of Coober Pedy?

Mate , it's surprising how quick the mind & body settle into a routine given the right mindset , especially in a new environment .Might be time to buy a chook chaser ( no not our forum's Chook LOL ) & explore around your new home away from home .Two years only looks a long time looking forward..............I'll bet the last two went bloody quick .Good luck with the new job , & enjoy the experience ( sitting around home too long can get boring & you can start to loose your self worth if your not careful )

My best wishes also. I know what it's like welding in hot conditions, but not that hot. 50. Hope they have an air-con'd workshop for ya.

It should only take a few days to make a mounting frame for a DR650 in the work ute.
Otherwise, I'm sure there would be a motocross/flat track club in the area.
All the best with your adventure MtB, two years will be up before you know it.

Best of luck with the job, it should be a awesome place for the Southern Winter, not sure how much the Wet effects where you're going but I'd imagine the humidity will be huge. If you've ever had thoughts about a adventure bike or chook chaser, now seems the perfect time
Re: New job means no ridding!!
Thanks all.
I`ll be staying in a camp on site, and they`re strictly not allowing anyone to leave the site. This is Bechtels rules. You do your time, they release you...mmmm
Needless to say, not a lot of people are happy with this view.
There are 4 major LNG projects going on in Australia at present.
1/Curtis Island, which has three different plants on it. One of which was Bechtel run, and the one I was employed on.This has been going for almost 4years, but now winding up.
2/Wheatstone
3/ Barrow Island(which is in the general area of Onslow),
4/ Ichthys Project, which is 20km outside Darwin. This is the project I wish I could have got on. They allow you to leave the site, and go into Darwin to be a normal person, if you don`t work a Sunday. Non Bechtel site.
The big picture, I can`t take a bike and explore. I will get to see a cyclone or two I`m guessing, so that`ll be fun.
W.A`s a big beautiful place, and one I`ve been lusting to explore, but in these circumstances, its just not going to happen.
Yep, two years will go in the blink of an eye, as the last two have.
Might even buy one of those "Water Cooled Bandits" everyone`s been talking about.

Re: New job means no ridding!!
Just planning ahead a tad for when you say "I've got to get away from this heat"
A friend of mine in Mackay used to work as an operator at South Walker mine.
Time for a change and he applied for, and got a position with the Australian Antarctic Division.
His role in Antarctica was to build an "ice runway" using dozers and other heavy machinery.
He was away from home for around 10 months with about 2 months in Hobart for training and the other 8 months in Antarctica.
They have an extensive range of jobs. I wouldn't be at all surprised if there was an opening for a boilermaker.
I understand the pay is pretty good with considerable tax concessions.
