Left Foot. Right Foot ?

Post  Hammy on Tue 25 Aug 2015, 7:33 am

Yesterday I had the opportunity to ride me bike over to the mainland and back. Was good to get back in the saddle after so long. Anyway. As I was riding through peak hour on the way over, it got me thinking. Stopping at those damn silly red, orange, green light things ( we don't have them or roundabouts on the Rock ) I always put down my right foot. So what you ask . Well . I looked at some other riders and some were putting down the left, and others the right.  The reason I put down the right is so that I have the left on the peg, at the ready for gear changes. I just think that would be natural. I have heard of some guys that use the foot brake on an uphill start as well. I seem to be able to handle that with just the front brake.  How do you guys n gals approach these situations.  By the way. It is now great fun filtering thru all the traffic at the lights, and knowing that you are doing it legally. Twisted Evil

Seriously though, I've got used to putting my left down on hills and as you said above, it's to use the foot brake for hill starts, flat road I don't care, often I'll put both down

Hi Hammy,
I`m basically the same as you, but do the right foot thing for hill starts.
Again I just take it because I`m right handed.

I think I read somewhere some time ago, that when your learning, the instructors teach to have your right foot on the brake, with bike in gear when stopped. Don`t take that as gospel, but to do with a safety aspect.

Yes filtering is good, but cages still don`t like it. I still get yelled at, or horn blasting me.

I prefer to put both my feet down when stopped at a light.
Like you on a slight uphill slope I will just use the front brake for a hill start, If its steep I will use the rear brake.

Feet down ??? Smile

Seriously though, that's my biggest fear about getting on a two-wheeler, I'll forget that when you stop gravity takes over.

Mainly right foot , but left one on a hill when I use the rear brake ( except on a small incline & then I use the front brake )...............or if it is a long light change sequence & put both feet down ............... (sorry MM I did't say that last bit to make you jealous , or show off or anything Razz )  I guess I'm what you call ambidextrous with my feet Laughing

Hi
I use my right foot 99 percent of the time.
But here is another one of these types of questions......

I always ride with 2 fingers covering the front brake lever and 4 fingers covering the clutch.
The clutch thing must be a throw back to the twostroke days but what do other people do?

I have tried to wean myself off doing it and have all fingers on the bars at all times.

But when in traffic I just cant help myself and back I go.

I have my left foot down but don't sit in gear once someone has stopped behind me.
But this causes a foot shuffle in anticipation of the lights going green.
I've tried putting my right foot down but it feels awkward.

Why not take advantage of the filtering laws to their full extent.
The next time you squeeze to the front, why not just lean against the guard of the car at the line. This way you don't have to put your feet down.
You do, however,  have the dilemma of which car to lean on. Right car? Left car?
Damn you Hammy!

After some of the looks you get for working your way up to the front.  I don't think leaning on a car would be a good idea.  Evil or Very Mad   It is a good feeling though. To get ahead of all those cages. Then do it all again at the next set of lights.  You can just about hear all the sighs of frustration from the cars you left behind.  cheers

Left foot Right Foot

Post  talon440 on Tue 25 Aug 2015, 1:50 pm

Now that you have raised this subject i really dont know which foot i put down mostly, but then i use both hands for everything i do, sawing, hammereing, wipeing my bum, shaving, cleaning my teeth it doesnt matter and i now realise i dont think about it at the time when i stop, think im like 2WA bit of a shuffle at the lights or on a hill to put it into gear or use back brake to take off, i know i use my back brake alot cause i just replaced the pads after 58000ks front is only half worn, now you have me thinking ill probably fall off at the next set of lights thinking about it.
