Not enjoying PR3`s second time around

Post  mtbeerwah on Wed 05 Aug 2015, 3:55 pm

As the title suggests, I`m not liking the PR3`s as before. The photo is of the new pair.
First time round, rode to Phillip Island on a new set, and they felt awesome. You could get absolute full use of front tyre, and turn it in hard,
with loads of confidants. These ones always feel as though I`m going to loose the front end and low side.
I can almost get full use, but you have to lean very very gingerly, to get it down, and it scares me to no end, thinking "here she goes"

Anybody else had multiple goes at them, and noticed a difference as I do?

I want to ditch them, as that's how much I hate them.

Yes I've been there.
My Spanish made ones were brilliant. The Thai made set were no where near as good especially the front which was vague and the rear only lasted 10,000km.
Where are yours made?

just had a look, and they`re from "Spain"

Don`t know what it is about them, but they feel like blocks of wood.

I hated Michelin pr2s. I'll take my life over tyre life. They were wooden too and were hopeless if you encountered gravel, sand or anything else on the road

I don`t believe it, out of the blue, these things, that were getting ready to throw me down the road, are now sticking like shit to a blanket!!

I don`t know what`s going on there.

They`re about a 1/3 worn now, and just starting to scallop on the front, but now can`t fault them.

They forgot to tell me about the 5000k, breaking in period.

I see that there are Smart 3s out now....

have you tried Pirelli Angels GTs?

I'm keen to try one of the above....

Just at the point where my rear tyre is over (PR4s)...  just done 10,000km on it, it's quite flat across the centre as I have done a lot of highway miles this time, many of them carrying a full load.... still plenty of meat on the edges, but not very exciting. Front has 1000km less, some mild cupping, but I swore I'd change both at the same time this time....

I've just put my original set of wheels (non-gold) back on for a bit of a run so I don't run up k's on the new PR4s (which I plan to use on the forthcoming Alpine Ride on the gold rims).  The original rim set has PR3s on them, having now done 7,200kms. I gave them a bit of a workout and was impressed with their grip in the tight stuff.  I'll take those rims off again in 2 weeks time, but I reckon the PR3s are not half way worn yet. I'd be happy to leave these on to be honest as they feel pretty good.

I find PR3s give you the impression of becoming wooden (maybe I'm looking for it in terms of the back being loose) but push them harder and they respond.  cheers
