Friday 4 o clock bike
A good mate of mine who will remain nameless bought a KTM 690 duke, now tag ooops did let the cat out..... Any way my good mate tells me hes buying a chooky with road tyres now i know how wise this mate is very technical, lots of research etc and as hes a great mate i drive him up to pick it up.
Looks all orange and white in the showroom just over $11000 on the road. Standard comes with a slipper clutch brembo brakes, some hard to pronuce wheels that sound like spaghetti, white power suspension, geeze for that price they chucked the rest in for free
On the way he explain that the chooky is going to be cheaper on tyres, chains and sprockets and rego than his bandit i go ok sounds a fair point cause for some reason bandits in the bega valley eat tires and the ctp people class us as baby killers.
So my mate has the duke for about 2 months and we are about to set on our annual vic alpine ride as look at this still quite shiney duke i say jeeze mate that tyre looks a bit light , he goes bullshit plenty left in that, then he looks at it bugger its stuffed lucky for the jake wilson bulk buy.
So this is where the sting in tail begins it eats tyres, and chains and sprokets , it throttle snatch is nastier than hooker whose been on a 48 hour bender, now the radiator leaks and it has a habit of laying down at the bp in tallangata, it been to the suspension and dyno people its got some dodgy this will fix everything cable tied to frame box it had an allergic reaction to a ebay italian exhaust that made it sound like a stationary pump, and broke its mounts, then cost the my mate new fancy ktm flavoured system to help with the snatch, the mirror fell off the ebay mirrors fell off mind you nearly killing me in then process, when the chain goes off it decided to eat the tyre and the instrument cluster has passed away and the rear brake light stays on burns your cornias out then try and find the missing brake part at ktm pffft they dont even know
I am sure glad i did nt go down the ktm path as its living up to its name keep throwing money at it mate
Ps did i forget anything

You forgot to mention that while (when) its going it gets along very well.
I was envious of Tag and everyone else milling around it at Harrietville until I realised he had everything except for the gearbox out at the motel

Re: Friday 4 o clock bike
Times are tough at KTM. They should be forgiven for their shortcomings.
I was working on the auto door at the local KTM dealer. It needs $1800 worth of repairs.
The manager had a grumble at the cost and told me that he would have to sell three new bikes to make that much. I gave a chuckle until he told me that he was serious and that their margins were that tight.
It could be something to do with all the warranty work.

Ill guess the door was designed and manufactured by.................KTM.
They don't need any margin on new sales - all the cash flow comes from replacement parts sales and fitting them.

I wasn't going to comment on this thread. But I will.
What is the meaning or reason for it ? The thread. I know there are some of us on here that have different bikes. Who cares. but I fail to see the purpose of this unless it is just trying to take the piss out of someone because of there predicament. Strange.

Yep, that's it right there, Hammy.
JC knows I have no problem with that whatsoever.

Re: Friday 4 o clock bike
I've often thought a chook chaser on road tyres would be a fun thing when I get to the stage I can afford a 2nd bike, I used to be able to push my XL500 through the Adelaide Hills on trail tyres as quick as most road bikes were going.
I had looked at the KTM's with a fair bit on envy the last few years, sounds like I might have to rethink brands before I ever go down that path.

Re: Friday 4 o clock bike
I bought it for just those reasons, Chook.
And I still say that for the areas I got it for - up the mountains in tight twisty roads - it's the best bike I've ever ridden for doing that job.
The only other bike I've been on that could come close up there was a 1200 Multistrada - at 35 grand.
But design flaws and constant component failures have cruelled the experience.

Re: Friday 4 o clock bike
It could be worse. A mate of mine many years ago bought a fairly low km KTM 520. Less than 1000 kms and he sent the bike for a valve check and once over. He got it back and took it for a spin. The bike was going like a cut cat.... For the couple hundred meets he rode it. Something went wrong with the timing and the crank smashed the balance what out the front of the motor. Over 4k later he got it back with a freshly rebuilt motor. It required brand new engine cases as the old ones were unserviceable. I think KTM make really good 2 strokes, I'm not sold on the four bangers though.

A mate has a 390 Duke for commuting. Great wee bike. He has taken it on the odd weekend mission when his CBR1k has been in for servicing. He loves it.
Guess it was a Monday one.

The 390 is built in India... maybe their QA is better

Hehe.
I know a guy in Melbourne who bought a 200 for commuting (Indian build) and his spent 3 months of its first year back at the dealer. Worse than mine.
NZspokes , I'm glad to see somebody is getting a good run out of one. A young guy in town here has just picked up an RC 390. He'll be glad to hear about your friends one.
Paul, my rates are very reasonable and I don't require cash up front . I can arrange a payment plan for you, no problems.
