Commodore Amiga 500 resurrection - not bike related Empty Commodore Amiga 500 resurrection - not bike related

Although this is not bike related I thought I'd share it. I've owned my Amiga 500 since around 1990, but around 10 years ago the for drive packed up. For anyone that knows these machines without a floppy drive they are useless. The floppy used was also different to those used in PCs so there was nearly zero chance of finding one. I've had 2 of these sitting in my she'd gathering dust and decided that is redirect them along with an arcade machine I have that has a broken crt. After some research I found a Gotek usb floppy emulator which was available on eBay. Some smart cookie had reprogrammed the device to work on the Amiga. Once the emulator showed up I used a TTL programmer and reflashed the device. I temporarily for the drive and tested it. It worked a treat, but less than a few hours into testing and Bang! A capacitor let go and sprayed cardboard and sit a all over the place. The Amiga was still working, but the video was doing in and out. So off to Jaycar to buy replacement caps for a 27 year old machine. Once I had the caps I replaced the lot to be on the safe side. I. Also bought a video converter off ebay so I could use the Amiga on all newer screens with avga plug. This required a special cable made up to suit the gonbes gbs 8200. Anyhow it's all working sweet now, my 5 year old loves it. I'll try and link some pics shortly

I had a C64 then a 128 then an Amiga. They were great in their day but I reckon I'd be frustrated these days. I'm used to the performance of my Mac's OSX and Intel Win7 boxes.
Good on you for tinkering though.

I remember those days, first the C64 then the C128 and finally the Amiga 1000.

There is a huge amount of documentation and software still available on www.binsearch.info

I also found the Zork game series. That was something that consumed many many hours. A friend of mine "mapped" one of the games on paper and had it sticky taped to a wall. There must have been around 100 A4 sheets.

I must be a hoarder as i still have my commodore 64 as well. Previous to getting the Amiga running i built a new video cable for the commodore 64 so i could connect it to my 50" plasma via svideo. For those that remember to get any picture quality from any commodore you had to buy the dinky 14" 1084s monitor which cost over $500 back in the late 80s early 90s. These days 14" doesn't cut it. I also gave my 1084s to a mate at work who has a room dedicated to old retro computers and game consoles so i had to pursue options to get them working with newer screens.

There is still quite a following for Amiga kit, its a pity commodore made so many bad decisions and went under as the hardware was much better than any pc for nearly a decade. I remember my first pc a 486sx, the graphics were crap and the music was blips instead of real sampled music which the commodore had been doing for well over 5 years prior. I had to install an expensive soundblaster and play about with start up configuration files to get something reasonable out of a $2500 machine. These days equipment is so cheap and its all throw away. Funny how things change.

Well done RD, I have long since sold off all my old kit.

When I was in the Army I had an exchange posting to California for a couple of years in the mid 80's.  When I left Oz the PC had not been released, everyone was into Z80 MicroBees and S100 Bus systems. The Comodore kit in the US was very cheap, I brougnt back a pair of 64's, a 128, heaps of 300 and 1200 baud modems, half a dozen disc drives, tape drive, X-Y ploter (printed on chash register size paper rolls), the 1083 monitor and even a Comodore daisy wheel printer, plus tons of games and utilities.  I also bought a Zenith Z-100 PC, this was released about 6 months prior to the first IBM PC and had about 128kb more memory, so it could emulate the PC in high memory and run the majority of IBM software.

The Zenith was the US Government standard at the time so govt employees could buy them at the government contract price.  I also brought back a "real" PC, but had loads more fun with the Z-100.

All long gone now, was sold in working order at least, I like to think it is still whurling away somewhere giving someone fun watching the chunky graphics, or being used to write some novel in Word Perfect software.....CTRL KB - CTRL KK

What model mate? It's not a 1200 by chance? I'm also trying g to hunt down a Commodore 64 disk drive if anyone has or knows one for sale. The 1541 II is what I am looking for btw. Failing that I'll just buy an sd2iec and run everything off an sd card instead of floppies.
