Trivial Pursuit!

Post  Ewok1958 on Mon 01 Dec 2014, 8:43 pm

Ok, I'm bored with pre-Xmas TV so here's a new thread.  First trivial pursuit question, applicable whichever part of the planet you live on, and speed related of course:

How fast is dawn approaching?  (Answer must be in kmph)

Re: Trivial Pursuit!

Wikipedia said she did not but then englishhistory.net said that she did.
Nicholas Sander, a Catholic Recusant who was living in exile during Elizabeth I's rule, was not a fan of Anne Boleyn and sought to discredit her and blacken her name by describing her as having a "projecting tooth under the upper lip", yet also describes her "pretty mouth", a large wen under her chin and six fingers on her right hand. This description must be taken with a large pinch of salt.
However, she may have had some sort of minor imperfection on her hand which gave rise to this myth as George Wyatt, grandson of Thomas Wyatt, says "there was found indeed, upon the side of her nail upon one of her fingers, some show of a nail".
In the opinion of some, if there was some defect on her hand it must have been very minor because Henry would not have pursued her for so long and broken with Rome to marry a woman who could pass a defect on to his heir to throne or who had signs of being a witch.
Very educational!  Wink

Oh dear, now we need an independent tribunal!  pale pale

I haven't done any research, but given the earth is not "upright", ie it's axis is not at 90 degrees to the sun, there must always some approach velocity of dawn, whatever point of the earth you're on.

Protest upheld.   bounce

Water colour is determined by the impurities in it i.e. the blue lake in Mt Gambier , the pink lakes in the SE. , green algal blooms etc , so theoretically water itself has no colour

Technically at the very point of axis , there would be no point of approach or departure , therefore it must follow at it's widest point on the earth the speed must vary

Not according to QI Paul!  The Book of General Ignorance claims that water has a very faint, but natural, blue colour.  Mr Fry puts forward some 'evidence' to support this assertion, which dismisses the idea that it is a reflection off the atmosphere, et al:

While relatively small quantities of water appear to be colorless, water's tint becomes a deeper blue as the thickness of the observed sample increases. The blue hue of water is an intrinsic property and is caused by selective absorption and scattering of white light. Impurities dissolved or suspended in water may give water different colored appearances.

Maths problem:

Line 1                  a = b
Line 2                a² = ab
Line 3         a² - b² = ab - b²
Line 4    (a+b)(a-b) = b(a-b)
Line 5    (a+b)(a-b) = b(a-b)
Line 6             a+b = b

                      If a = 1, and a+b = b, then
                   1 + 1 = 1
                         2 = 1

Too much to type it all out , but this ..................

a=b a=a true
a^2=ab a^2=a*a true
a^2-b^2=ab-b^2 a^2-a^2=a*a-a^2 true (=0)
(a+b)(a-b)=b(a-b) (a+a)(a-a)=a(a-a) true (=0)
a+b=b a+a=a false (unless a=0!)
b+b=b a+a=a false
2b=b 2a=a false
2=1 2=1 false
