The article and the comments are largely directed towards the 1200.  It scarcely covers the 1250.  The shame of it is that his comments might put people off buying a 1250 on the basis that it might have had a hard life.  In reality, the opposite is true.  The 1250 is all about torgue so they don't need to be thrashed.  It is quite conceivable that you'd buy a second hand one that has never seen the tacho get to 6000rpm (or even lower).  And how many of us ever wheelie a 1250?  It is a beast of very different character to the 1200 and I'm disappointed that he fails to make that important point in his summary comments.  Piss poor piece of journalism IMHO.

I don't baby mine, but I do t thrash it either. That journalist is a knob. Shit bikes are due to shit owners and poor maintenance. If anything all Bandit motors are tough as nails. Unless you are a knob they'll last many 100000s of kilometres. I've ridden my mates gen1 1200 and its hell twitchy compared to my 1250. Still for an older bike that motor kicks arse.

I didn't think he was knocking the engine.  Just putting it out there that given the 1200 reputation as a hoon machine an example may have been thrashed. It's nothing more than what any of us might suspect and consider accordingly.
Suspension and brakes are fair comment.

If I was in the market for a 1lt + bike and a Bandit was on my list, then this article would not have deterred me one bit. In fact it probably would have made me save a few more pennies to get a 1250 as is recommended. I think it was a pretty accurate assessment of the Bandit as all of us know it's downfalls, but also know that the engine is what draws us to it. The Bandit fits into a category of , "Men who want to tinker in the shed" bikes.

Reading the article was very familiar as I'd owned a 2005 model up till two years ago.
That being said, I put 115 000km on it with not a problems, same battery aswell!
I upgraded to the 2010 1250cc and agree with his assessment, the engine is more enjoyable but brakes and comfort are not as good as earlier model.

I new what I was buying when I signed the papers for both Bandits I have bought. The price verses running gear and quality I totally understood and never expected to get a Ducati style finish.
I expected a bike to start when I wanted it to, blinkers to light up when I switched them on and the engine to more than pull a skin off a custard pie when I gave it a squirt.

All these things both Bandits have done in spades. I made a point of buying brand new both bikes so I knew how I would treat them, if you aer mechanically minded then you probably will find a fantastic second hand one out there.

I think the article is quite honest and we really don't need jounos blowing sunshine up the Bandits' butt just so we can feel justified with our own purchase, WE ALL KNOW how the Bandit goes when we twist the throttle and hit the anchors. When the day arrives when I am not happy with it, I will look for other machines.

If you want to ride a bike that journos are blown away with and write glowing reports about, go for a S1000RR BMW HP4. I hardly ever see bad reviews on them.

I think the assumption any bandit you may be looking at buying will probably be flogged or neglected just because it is a budget bike is crap . Of all the owners I know ( including this forum ) I think the amount of examples in that category would be very few . Almost all of us still have a fair sum invested in our bikes , & most are proud enough of it to customise it to our own taste or needs  & not treat as a throwaway item with little or no regard for it .I do however think the old motor bandits will most likely be the ones which are more " collectable " in the future as they were the original in the model run .Although the author of the article doesn't completely shit-can the bandit , he does make some assumptions as to how they have been treated which puts us all in a derogatory category of how we care for our bikes . Apart from that , his assessment is  reasonably fair & accurate in my opinion .
