Lookin' at a Bandit
Hi Guy's,
Looking at buying a Bandit next year, prefer the SA version. Will be changing from a DL1000. The DL is to tall to be getting my ageing limbs over especially 2 up. I would appreciate any advise on mods that would make it the ideal tourer and commuter.
At the moment I am looking at adding heated grips, engine guards, chain oiler, new muffler, radiator guard and maybe altering the seat some how.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Rod.

Re: Lookin' at a Bandit
Welcome Rod. Modifying the seat is a good idea - probably best to find a good upholsterer and refoam it with a hard foam at the base and a softer one on top. Maybe some reshaping if you think it needs it. The "S" (including the "SA") have crap headlights so if you are planning night rides you'll need to either put in higher output bulbs or install a HID kit. I've so far not bothered as I avoid night riding. In the long term, some suspension upgrades might help it corner better but probably don't need to be a priority unless you like more sport in the sports-touring department. I also have installed a Healtech speedo healer (plug & play) as the standard machine under-reads by about 7% (which is way too much), and a Healtech gear position indicator (also plug and play) as the "S" doesn't have one, unlike the naked and FA versions.
Cheers mate.

Re: Lookin' at a Bandit
Thanks Ewok, not worried about the speedo being out as I think the DL has 8% difference. Need to look at the suspension as my wife and I are a big lump of Australia. Night riding not really a an issue as usually done in suburbia, bit higher output bulb could be an option. Seems to be a seat remodeller not far from here, will see what costs are involved.
Love to buy one now SB1250 but need to wait at least 6 months financially.

I thought for sure you must have at least put in a brighter bulb

Re: Lookin' at a Bandit
Well that explains it. In that case yours is pretty bad too, because it looks like a good low beam

Re: Lookin' at a Bandit
My advice is to not plan any mods and see what it needs to suit you after you give it a good shake down.
A radiator guard isn't a mod in my opinion. Its a must. Even the seat isn't too bad if you're carrying a bit of your own padding

Re: Lookin' at a Bandit
G'day Rod Rocket.
I can't speak highly enough of the OGGY Knob crash protection bar as it was totally worth the money I spent after I'd dropped the Bandit in the driveway.
Not a mark on the Engine or Fairing and only few little rough scratches on the Bar itself that i have sanded back and painted which now is hard to even see that it'd been scratched.
I think a throttle/palm saver is gold as for the long distances your not gripping on too hard to the handlebar and you can stretch your fingers well. Its about $15 - $20 around the traps.
Braided brake lines , particulary the front, give even better feel and connection to the tyre and brake pads.
Most of the other stuff you do will be just bling for the bike, so make it personal!
Good luck and see you out there.

Gidday Rodrocket. Radiator guard is a must. Don't want to be stuck on the side of the road with a hole in ya radiator. All else is up to you but when you mention something on here you will get a lot of feedback one way or another. Best of luck with your search.

Cheers Hammy.
Have had the radiator issue before, riding on the freeway after picking up new bike and ordering new rad guard and holed the radiator, luckily they could repair it but took a week.

Re: Lookin' at a Bandit
Finally purchased a bandit last week, 2012 model, first registered in 2013 so still 6 mths factory warranty and only 18000km on the clock. Great condition, no marks and stock standard. Had heated grips, scott oiler and givi top box added. Booked in to have suspension upgraded next week then a new muffler. Very excited and very different to the old V strom I traded.
