Has anybody ever made a wooden paddock stand?
This is kind of a "goodbye and thanks for all the help" message as I traded my 1250 in for a GSR 750 yesterday. But I have developed some considerable respect for the mechanical knowledge and experience of the community here so I thought it might be worth trying my luck with you guys. As you will probably be aware, the GSR has no main stand, so at some point I'll be needing a paddock stand and wood seems like the ideal material to me: it won't scratch the bike, it's easy to work with and it's cheap; and surely, if I make a stand from 2x2s, it'll be strong enough. So ... has anybody ever done this? I googled it and didn't come up with anything good so maybe there's a fundamental flaw; but what it could be, I don't know.

After their sale last year Aldi had rear paddock stands on special for $39.95. They looked pretty decent too. If you get one at that sort of price, it might be an alternative to making one. Not that I want to dissuade you...

I just recently read this:
[Aldi] is famous for its flash sales. Ski poles, cycling equipment and tablet computers have all made fleeting visits to Aldi's shelves - but only in limited numbers. These higher-price items, available for a short time only, are "a great way of getting people to come back to the store," says retail analyst Graham Soult. "It's random stuff but it taps into the quirkiness of Aldi, that they sell items the other supermarkets don't." [From http://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-magazine-monitor-28421722.]
so I knew Aldi sold weird stuff. But paddock stands? That makes them the coolest supermarket of all time I guess. Unfortunately, no Aldi here in Hong Kong and, if there is, their flash sale special is not going to be home mechanic equipment because nobody does any. But you're right: if I could get a stand for HK$300, I would. It was a guy at Suzuki HK that told me I would have to get one made and that he couldn't order one for me; but they probably welded up a couple 20 years ago and haven't looked around since.

Thanks Paul! This thing is proof-of-concept I guess: http://www.woodworkingtalk.com/attachments/f2/25751d1402607942t-wooden-motorcycle-lift-stand-motorcycle-stand-resize.jpg though it is not a thing of beauty! I would definitely add some cross-bracing and I probably wouldn't bother with the wheels: just round off the part that rotates on the ground when lifting the bike.

So in the L one above ,what happens when you get angry and push the stuck new wheel(tire) to get it into place . Bad things that's what .

I have just bought one for my CBR650F. Good construction and for $85 posted I wouldn't consider making one from any material.

So put a U-shaped groove in the top of the 2x2 so that the swingarm sits right inside and screw a cap down over the swingarm so that the bike can't tip out of the stand. And screw a plank to the base of the stand so that the whole stand can't tip over.
I've got no idea whether any of this is feasible, I'm just thinking aloud.

Re: Has anybody ever made a wooden paddock stand?
I have a very expensive Sharp Racing stand and a $70 odd Kaneg stand and quality wise they're the same in my opinion.
I don't reckon I'd be making one out of any material for the price of Kaneg stands.

^^^^^What he said
I've made my own tyre change gear, a lift table, various tools, benches, storage etc, and Chris most obviously could outdo me. But there are things its not worth putting the time into.
I've got Kanegs too. Aussie made, cheap, reliable.

Paddock stands from UNDER ELEVEN Aussie dollar:
http://s.taobao.com/search?spm=a230r.1.8.3.vTGqsg&sort=sale-desc&initiative_id=staobaoz_20140816&tab=all&q=%C4%A6%CD%D0%B3%B5%C6%F0%BC%DC&suggest=0_7&stats_click=search_radio_all%253A1#J_relative
with bobbins at about AUD 4.40. OK, I don't want to put my brand new bike on a ten buck stand but this looks OK:
http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.59.DhKEH0&id=36646116042&ns=1#detail
and delivery to Hong Kong is really cheap.
