LED Headlight Empty LED Headlight

My favourite overseas website www.banggood.com has some LED headlights/spotlights for sale.

One model comes in an external housing with mounting bracket, the other would need the headlight modified similar to what Barry posted previously.

I think my 1250S has lead light as standard. Once the light passes the lens it falls straight to the road  Mad

I might check them out though Smile

One of the more popular sites for all things lighting is the forums over at HID Planet.  I've been watching with interest what has been going on with LED headlights, and even though there has been a handful of manufacturers coming out with them (Mercedes, Toyota, Subaru), the concensus is that we are still a little ways from good aftermarket/retrofitting of a LED light source for main headlights.

Multiple 90mm mini projectors seem to give the best coverage, but aligning one of these outside of a factory enviroment would be a challenge.

As for those LED H1/7 (etc) style replacement bulbs, they might be okay when searching for your vehicle in a dark carpark, but they would make the standard Bandit light look like a super-nova.

It appears the current crop of LED headlights are better than halogen, but not as good as HID, a lot seem to be in the hotter 5000k and above range (blueish light) which means they have actually less usable light, and replacement costs are fairly expensive. However LEDs are consistently producing 120Lm/watt, where as HIDs are at 40-50Lm and LEDs are about twice as efficient as well, so if the engineers get their act sorted, LED headlights could possibly be standard on most vehicles in the future.

I think it's one of those "watch this space" things for now, I can't see the small footprint of the current bike headlights being suitable for an LED arrangement that will out perform a good halogen or come anywhere near a decent HID.

I'm with Barry on this.

I`ve been watching LED`s for a long time, and am still waiting the day when they perfect them. when they do, I`ll go down that avenue, but until then, nah!!

I`ve had a look at one of these in the flesh,    http://www.bikermart.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=226-010     and wasn`t convinced. It had major holes in light dispersion on low beam.

Some other brands are, Speaker LED insert replacements, which a lot of trucks are now using, and Nighthawk LED replacement inserts.

These are for your typical 7" round lights though, but are all low/high beam sealed LED units.

None of these lights are cheap, and for the same money, I`d be going for quality projector HID set ups

Until they can get even more light out of smaller packages you still need a fair number of LEDs to produce a decent light, eg. those 4WD light bars for example appear to be on par with the Hellas of old.

This one that is currently on eBay has a pretty good output (7560 Lm at 108W), but half the LEDs are spot and the other half fog/wide spread.  You can easily see the difference between this style and the newer lens type vehicle headlight pictured above.

When you work out the available power of most bike alternators, for me 35 or 55W 4300K HIDs are still the better choice, for now.
