Fucking tyre companies

Post  Jimcoleman on Sat 31 May 2014, 7:18 am

What is with tyre companies. Geezus christ do they think the motor cycling community are fools
Just reading the performance stats on the PR4 very impressive braking figures on polished concrete, and epoxy too
Well i ask this question when are you going to do a high speed braking monuvour on polished concrete. Actually apart from the tvs block show where do find polished concrete. Expoxy ? Oh the simulates the line paint, ok yeah we know that can be slippery but i tend to like to stay away from it let alone ride on it.

And pirelli lets do the wankiest tyre launch ever, break out the italian air craft carrier get some shit box kawasakis, flood the fucking the deck with seawater, let a heap of dick journo' s who wouldnt know what real world was if reared up and bit em to do impressive break tests. For fuck sake the deck of a carrier is one of the most grippiest surfaces in the world

Pirelli say a life span of 25,000ks, bull shit for the way i like to ride if i get 8 to ten i am happy

As for your bullshit spec mr michelin you can have it at least mr shinko is honest

Rant over, time to take my happy pill

The tyre company "tests" are more likely to be a marketing exercise.  The trick is to find a good test report from, say, a bike magazine.  I find the Pommey magazine tests are usually superior as they seem more factual, succinct and honest than our lot (who I assume think they won't get any more freebies to test if they say something negative).

"succinct".   Probably up for word of the day there Ewok.   Wink

Furthermore to the post. I tend to go by "word of mouth ", where I can.  Talking to guys in bike shops about different products usually gets some interesting info'. I was about to buy a certain brand of oil for an oil change a while ago. The young sales guy asked me what bike it was for. Then recommended a slightly cheaper, but still top, well known brand, and told me that it was better than my first choice. He did know his stuff and I was very grateful for his good service.

Here here! that's why we are here in the forum to listen to real world tests and opinions from other riders.

As for the company tests, they just like to make it look impressive as a marketing exercise. Using unlikely but extreme conditions to "prove" their point. Average Joe wouldn't know that an aircraft carrier has a very grippy surface so the stunt looks impressive and therefore sells tyres.

By the way Jim epoxy and smooth concrete is used in many multi story carparks. Entrances to these places can be very slippery when wet as the water from outside is taken in on car tyres. However any bike rider who might choose to park in one isn't going to be going hard inside. Personally I'd park outside on the footpath for free Wink

My work motorcycle parking area.

I've got a copy of the security footage that shows the PR3 doesn't have good grip on that surface when it's dusty  Embarassed

First Facebook , now tyre companies , nothing wrong is there Jim ?

Most companies when describing  any of their products do it to embellish it &  any advertising for a product always seems to be a  over the top ..........no point in just saying they are round  & stop your rims from wearing out I don't suppose . LOL
+1 for independent assessments

Well you have to buy one of them even if you hate the advertising. Buy one if it's no good, try another. I've had Bridgestone , Metzeler and now Pirelli. I'll keep changing till I find one that I really like for grip and wear. Not much point buying something someone else recommends as we all ride differently. You have to try for yourself.

I take advertising with a grain of salt generally.
But I'll say you won't buy a crap tyre from any of the major makers. Some may not be suitable for what/how we ride but that doesn't make them "crap". So how do marketer make their products seem superior?  Make the stunts and claims bigger and bigger and the fine print smaller and smaller.  Smile

I get you though Jim.

that's true - they are all good.  i think that you get used to riding on worn tyres and when you get new ones of a different brand you might think they are so much better - having forgotten what the old ones were like when first put on.  i have only used pirelli angels and there is a fundamental difference when you put a new set on compared to the worn  ones

I have just come back from China for work and have picked up some new techniques that get the most out of a motorcycle tyre, let me share them with you.
1. Ride around erratically and never in a straight line for more than 5 metres (this allows even wear across the surface of the tyre)
2. Ride on the tyre until it is completely bald
3. Find a rusty 3" nail and nail it half way into a lump of wood you have shaped into a handle
4. Sharpen said nail so you have a pointy tip
5. scratch a criss-cross pattern on the bald tyre, carefully rotate for 360 degrees
This is what they call chinese retread, a guy was making money on the side of the road in Pudong doing just this.

I think the yellow man has watched old episodes of monty python and thinks thats how things are in the western world.
I went to commission a machine that they installed for anealling copper tube. All they had to do was to install in a straight line & level.
What an impossible dream!!
The idiots used shims to jack up feet that were actually jacking bolts, and they cemented the thing in place.
