How to remove a tank scratch Empty How to remove a tank scratch

Post  snitter Tue 25 Mar 2014, 5:37 pm

Not sure if this is the right section for this...apols for mis-posting if I messed up!

So, came out to my bike this afternoon after work to find a large-ish semi-circular scratch across the right side of the fuel tank, right about where my inner thigh would go. Wasn't there when I parked it...sigh.

I don't think the scratch goes down to the metal.

Does anyone have any hints or suggestions as to how it could be removed? Panel beater? Buffer? Rub it vigorously with a brushtail possum?

I'm with Gus but use the lightest cutting cream you can get. Suzuki just waved the spray gun near my bike. Not even sure they know what a clear coat is.
Good luck.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I'll try the cutting compound and let you know how it went.

I use a product by 3m called pad glaze or something like that. Its mainly for use with a machine polisher, mainly used for taking out light scratches and swirl marks that you get from cutting compound. I'd try something like that first. Cutters can be a little drastic especially on really thin paint, the last thing you want to do is rub away the clear coat

If your in western Sydney or near by I could take a look, I am a spraypainter 30+ years, If not go very easy with any machine polishing, I've seen plenty of people make a mess of paintwork without the skills needed.
Another alternative is take it to a spraypainter near you and get them to have a go getting it out, I couldn't imagine they'd charge you too much for that.

Thanks for the offer, Paul! I'm in Yass, so might talk to my mechanic about who he might recommend.

So my mechanic had a look and he recommended Meguiars X 2.0 (it's not a cutting compound, something much finer).

Worked a treat! Although it took some elbow grease.

Sorry for the ad, but I can thoroughly recommend this stuff!

Sounds simple enough to use.
How much $$ for the bottle?

Snap! Forgot to mention.
$22 from Autopro Yass for a 200mL bottle. You use it very sparingly, so that bottle should last a loooooong time.
