What on earth .......

Post  gus on Sat 29 Mar 2014, 8:29 am

3  jocks
3 pr socks
jeans
jumper
thermal top
3  t-shirts
mid layer pants (aldi -great )
nylon wets .

All this goes into one ventura bag along with small items like neck scarf ,phone charger etc

All this gives you one bag 3\4 full (not camping )

This worked well on a 5 week trip to Tasmania . (they do have Laundromats )

So what on earth are you die hard side pannier ,top box , tank bag guys taking with you to need all that room ? Very Happy

I often wonder myself, although I like to pack 5 days worth of jocks and shirts.

I like the 46L topbox on the VStrom it is waterproof and lockable but doesn't hold as much as my old bag. Sad

Because I can't be f*#fed using Laundromats, or hand washing in a sink and hoping the clothes are dry the next day.

Besides after unloading into the motel room etc I can get half a slab in each pannier  Wink

Top Box: 2 Laptops and technical books in a backpack with cables etc.

Divided between panniers:

-For emergencies - First Aid Kit, Fire Extinguisher, and Fire Blanket .
-Mini aircompressor and tire repair kit
-Cargo net
-Wet weather jacket and pants
-Small umbrella
-Stretch cover for bike when parked at work
-Kickstand pad
-Small toolkit
-2 liter drink bottle

Still leaves room for the occasional bit of shopping needing to be brought home after work.

When I take the backpack out of the top box I have a place for my helmet, gloves, and leather jacket: very handy when out and about.

Aside from the technical books and one of the laptops pretty much everything else goes with me when taking longer rides, especially the emergency kit.

I will say a Ventura bag does hold a lot and it weight up high does not help handling at all . I hate the way the bag sits above the seat .(to be rectified )
Hand wash ?. Tasmania not India . Shocked  Very Happy
ONE of the laptops , technical books ? Dumb it down a bit . Laughing  (I must lift my game ) Very Happy

The thing I didn't like about my Ventura bag was it not being waterproof.

Yes I know, but why should you buy a bag that isn't waterproof and then spend extra for a cover to go over it.
A mate of mine had an Rjays bag sitting on a Ventura rack and was not only waterproof but cheaper than 2 of the Ventura Aero bags

There is 4 days in a pair of jocks .At least 2 are comfortable - normal -inside out .
The back to front method in extremes  Laughing

A garbage bag in the ventura works well but you can never find what you are looking for .

If I'm going somewhere overnight with the Ventura then I just throw in a black garbage bag , just in case. It would be only to get me to the next shelter anyway. I'm not one to ride in the rain.

And MM.  Whats wrong with washing your jocks in the shower ?

Like Gus said 4 days each pair................with the price of a 5 pack at Coles you could have a three week holiday away , sling them in the bin when all 4 sides are crusty , & never have to do any laundry while your away  Laughing

Nothing as long as you can guarantee they are dry the next day.

And the garbage bag is what we did in Tassie. I still think its pretty f@*ked that you pay that much for Ventura gear and then pay more for a waterproof cover.

Re: What on earth .......

Post  jstava on Sun 13 Apr 2014, 7:37 am

Ventura - I was skeptical when I first saw them.  The rack didn't look serious enough.  My Bandit came already fitted with the GIVI / Ventura combination.  Who am I to argue but I'm still skeptical.  Yeah, the bag leaks.  So do the panniers.  Extra protection has always been the go with me.  Fact of life.

The Zip on the bag is way underdone.  Too light by 2 sizes.  I think serious zips should have lugs.  The guy who is going to replace it says coils, on account of the corners.  I haven't had it done yet.  Still skeptical.

When I wheel the bike out from its spot under the verandah, The rack creaks at the joins.  Still creaks after going as tight as I dare. Bag on rack - this one is only good for light, bulky things in my view.  The whole plot mounts a little high for my liking.  Can't have it all.  Meh, for the cost of it all, it is still fairly light duty, but works.

Sounds a bit like a whinge, but it actually works for me.  Dunno if I'd be paying twice as much as this is worth to replace it. Any of the real good gear is pretty agricultural.  It's a keeper, in spite of reservations and little issues.  I might sweat the rack on permanently if it continues to annoy me and doesn't fail in places other than at the join.   I think it's less likely than someone running off with the bag and/or the rack top.
