The Government hit back, dismissing Mr O'Neil as "not an expert in road safety''.

Of course, standard comeback when anyone criticises speed cameras.

Victorians have been saying the same thing for years. Speed cameras are just another form of tax collectors and the government is addicted to the income.

Rewarding motorists with good driving records, as happens in Victoria, was another necessary change, he said.

Not anymore, read here

Ive just read this on the TL forum, its by a bloke over here to work in the mines. A nice reflection of the police state we all knew we were living in.

So how do you guys have fun here with a Bike?

So I have been in WA for just over 1 year. First 3 months with a bike I have 5 tickets and 9 demerit points. I come from London UK, and we ride how we want pretty much, so there is no enforcement. I have ridden very fast on UK public roads, daily and never had a ticket in my life. Oh and I refuse to sit in traffic and not filtersurprise , surprise Confused

In WA it is crazy, every day is a crack down on something motoring related. Silly thing is, your speed limits are way too low, your enforcement completely over the top yet the roads (statistically) are twice as dangerous as the UK, a place where there is very little speed enforcement.

(UK members, seriously, UK roads are heaven compared to WA in Aus, so do not complain)

I have now adjusted my riding and have tuned my bikey senses to look for white vans, bobile cameras, cops with radar, and unmarked police cars all while looking at my speedo constantlysurprise , surprise Dunno

I agree we can't do as we please, it was the last sentence that I agree with totally. I find myself constantly doing the same thing around Wagga. We have those private operators of speed cameras around here everywhere and they are in the paper every second day for doing the wrong thing ( parking in no parking zones, Bike lanes, obstructing traffic and so on) so much so they have been ordered to a meeting yesterday with the roads minister and the RTA. The thing is in Wagga as in other country towns, the roads are that wide ( from the horse and cart times ) and the speed limits are so low (50kmh ) that its very easy to do 52 in a 50 zone. Theres goes two points and $283. They sit where there hasn't been an accident for 10yrs but people may lose concentration for a split second and creep over. They are doing nothing to curb to road toll, its revenue raising at its best and its a bloody sore point around here.
Don't get me wrong, Im a law abiding citizen and If you speed ( and lets be reasonable ) you deserve what you get. 2-3kmh over 50 limit on a 20m wide road with no houses on one side in a bloody joke. But you have no recourse, you have to pay and lose the points. B12Mick Im speaking of Kincaid St and outside the show grounds on Bourke St.
So in summing up, I too find myself constantly looking out for White utes with cameras Silver Ford Territories with cameras, police cars, police bikes hiding behind trees with radar guns and looking at my speedo. You hardly have time to scan for hazards and concentrate on what you should be concentrating on. Thats why I rarely ride around town. I only get my bike out to go on a decent ride nowadays. Its a shame, but thats how it is.
Should I have put this in the Rant thread??

I had a yarn to one of the chaps that operate the camera car (flash for cash) up here a while back. He set the cam for the speed limit +10%

& a little,,,,,,,,

Pretty sure he wasn't bullshitting me, as I had had dealings with him a few times before the flash for cash cars were brought back into NSW

Why shouldn't I be rewarded for NOT getting a ticket for 3 years . If I get court doing 65 in a 60 but no ticket in the last 2 years ( ?) I should get a
" let off " for good behaviour .
I know plenty of guys who have sold their road bike because of over policed road rules .

Now there's a study that should be undertaken, how much more dangerous is it to be constantly looking at the speedo than concentrating on the road and roadside obstacles.

Digital speedos would be even worse as it takes the mind that extra longer to interpret the figure, in that time how far have you travelled ? Enough to not see the child run out onto the street ?

The authorities are always going on about cabin distractions whilst driving, however they seem to be perpetuating this behaviour that takes your concventration off the road.  Whilst I'm not advocating unlimited speeds, an up to say  5kph over should be defensible (in court ?) for the stafety factor alone in keeping your eyes on the road not the dash.

Yay Barry. cheers  cheers . Thats what I'm talking about. Theres enough to worry about with car drivers on the phone, trying to type an address into their sat nav, piss around with the six stacker CD player, scroll through their iPod looking for a certain song, send a text to their BOYF to tell them they think they're cute, tweet the world to say they're wearing red socks today. Im always taking this into consideration whilst riding and think my powers of observation would be put to better use looking out for distracted drivers and little kids and dogs and potholes and general hazards rather than worrying about being 1-2kph over the limit and therefore looking endlessly at the dash and around for cameras. Theres no 10% leeway here Steve, I can assure you. The Highway Patrol guys will give you up to 10% depending on how they feel on the day. But the sneaky basterds in these flash for cash cars don't. You just get a ticket 2 weeks later in the mail to say you were 2kph over the limit, last Tuesday fortnight.

If they put the cameras at the Black Spots they'd find the accidents would not abate, and then they'd get all shy and embarrased as their lies about cameras saving lives are uncovered for the clap-trap it is.

There are some studies from overseas that indicate accidents increase as speed limits are reduced as Joe Citizen now thinks the area is safer and pays even less attention to driving and more to his armchair comfort and gadgets.

Anyone else on the forum get aust road rider?
There was a write up in it last month where a journalist from pomgolia drove from Melb to Syd, at 130kmh. He didn't get stopped, or even a flash for cash ticket, & arrived in Syd, alive!
Holy shit!
He was speeding!
He should be f#?king dead shouldn't he. He was doing more than the speed limit!
( after & including "Holy shit" I was being facetious )

I understand why the guy from UK is scratching his head. I borrowed a mate's car when I visited the UK and I thought I was 'gone' when I went through a trap on the motorway at about 10-15mph 'over'. So I warned my mate, said there might be a fine on its way and I'd pay it, apologies for the points.

He looked at me and said "Don't worry, they won't be interested in you at 10mph over. Its not like Australia, they're only after the nutters!"

And lo, two years later there's no fine for me 'running a trap' at maybe 15mph. If I'd done 24km/h over an Aussie speed limit, I'd be a 'criminal'!!

So, how do we guys have fun on bikes in Oz?

It is free, it is undetectable, and it tells you where the traps, cameras, etc are.

Five years back on the bike now, and no fines, no demerits - and lots of fun  cheers

I know this is a little off topic but it's a shame they don't use ADR 18 when considering speed detection/fine BS.

The early versions say
indicate the actual vehicle speed, for all speeds above 40 km/h, to an accuracy of ± 10 per cent
And in the latest version it says
The speed indicated shall not be less than the true speed of the vehicle.
There is more to that paragraph about test speeds and such, but that's the bit I wish they would read when they issue tickets for 1 or 2 kph over the limit.

It relies on other drivers in the area using their Trapster app and reporting what they see.
Darwin is not a big place but there's plenty Trapster users.
I enabled "push" notifications and new traps come up as a message when reported.
Dead useful when you are about to head off somewhere.
Effective? Ride almost every day, no tickets for a couple of years now.
