Why does this talk about a 'Republic'?

15. Freedom of movement and residence

 1.      Everyone has the right to freedom of movement.
 2.      Everyone has the right to leave the Republic
 3.      Every citizen has the right to enter, to remain in and to reside anywhere in, the Republic.
 4.      Every citizen has the right to a passport.

I am no political junkie,  but I do have reservations about going down the American path and having a Bill of rights.
It seems to me that if you start to define what rights you have as a citizen with a Bill of Rights,  then you also define what rights you don't have if they are not on the list.
Very quickly we would learn that the list needs to be modified. And then you open up a whole new kettle of fish having to pass amendments through parliament.
I believe that we have it pretty well sorted at the moment. I dont know of anyone campaigning because they feel opressed by Australian law, except the gay marriage loby, which I believe should and will have the law changed eventually.  The system nworks.
A push to become a Republic just for the sake of change would cost the country a lot and benefit few, I believe.  Seriously, when was the last time the Royals interfered with the way that the country runs.
A better bet for Australia,  in my opinion,  would be Federalism.  Keep the state names,  but drop the governments and have one Federal Government.  Australia is the most over governed country in the world,  imo.
If it's not broke, don't fix it. And remember,  the grass is always greener on the other side.

Sorry Fat Pete.
I am in NSW and hadn't been aware of the Qld police brutally.
I can see the intention behind the bikie laws. I think it's the best the government could do ina hurry to stop criminals selling drugs to yours and mine kids. I see that the police are using the laws in less than appropriate ways and that needs to be curtailed.
And yes I did serve my country.

I appreciate that, Fat Pete.
And seeing the efforts of the Qld police has opened my eyes to some injustices being carried out.
In have experienced quite a few cultures around the globe and always count my blessings that I live in Australia.
It may not be perfect,  but I think the term "the lucky country" should serve to remind everyone just what we do have and to think long and hard about what needs to be done to make it better.
I fear political scare tactics, lol, as on a whole society can get carried away with agendas that purport to be for the good but eventually turn out to be a step backwards.
Keep up the good work bringing on the links to raise the veils of ignorance for people like myself,  Pete.

If this statement is true than its not just an American thing anyway.

From Wikipedia
Australia is the only Western democratic country with neither a constitutional nor federal legislative bill of rights [1][2] to protect its citizens, although there is ongoing debate in many of Australia's states. Former Australian Prime Minister John Howard has argued against a bill of rights for Australia as transferring power from elected politicians (populist politics) to unelected (Constitutional) judges and bureaucrats.[3][4] Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) are the only states and territories to have a human rights bill. Australia decided to list Human Rights Watch’s Australian affiliate, Human Rights Watch Australia, as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) on June 28, 2013.[5]

So that might explain why we get f*#ked over so much

Even the poms have a bill of rights, and I think we need one.

It just through me as to why a proposed bill of rights for Australia mentions 'republic' - seemed strange.

And I too served in the ADF (RAAF) as did my wife (RAAF), brother (RAN) and now my eldest son is in the Army.

Bosco, the problem with the QLD laws isn't the police. It's the laws themselves.  The government has given itself the power to declare an organisation and it's members to be criminal with no input from the courts.  No court case, no presenting evidence before a magistrate/Judge/Jury.  No opportunity for the organistion or members to defend themselves.

The government simply adds the organisations name to a list and hey presto that organisation is now criminal and it's members can be subject to harsh mandatory sentences and non parole perids for relatively insignificant crimes.

Hell 3 mates can't have a beer in a pub together without being arrested.

Regardless of your thoughts on OMC's, you have to remember that regardless of what the Government tries to tell you, these new pieces of legislation can be used against ANY organisation.  No where in the guts of the legislation does it mention bikies, bike clubs or motorcycles as being specifically targeted.  Only in an appendix are 26 clubs named.  But 2 of the clubs named don't actually exist, one club has just one member in QLD and he's already in gaol, and they've spelled one of the other names incorrectly.

As proven when the police raided the Vietnam Veterans Clubhouse.
