Australian Motorcycle Manufacturer ? Empty Australian Motorcycle Manufacturer ?

Post  Hammy Wed 11 Dec 2013, 4:16 pm

Maybe the time has come for someone with the resources and knowhow to start a motorcycle manufacturing plant here in Australia.  SA perhaps ?  After the sorry news for all the Holden workers, Australia is in desperate need of a shot in the arm along the manufacturer workers line. Just imagine a true blue Ozzie bike.  I'm not just talking one model. I see a whole range. Trail, road, MX. The skies the limit.  If HD can do it for America, then why not here down under.  It only has to have ( or not have ) one thing that all the rest do/don't. And BAM ! A legend is born. Surely two wheeled , cheaper, and cleaner transportation is the way to go.   Any ideas ?

I like what your thinking, unfortunately anyone thinking of it would face the same problems Nissan, Ford, Holden and (prediction) Toyota faced.

High Australian dollar, small domestic market, high cost of manufacturing and a very competitive market

I dunno - with a few low cost mods this might form the basis of an Aussie postie bike - our biggest seller.  And, as a special offer for the viewers, it can double as a treadmill.  Can't lose.

Mate in 12 months id hate to think. It would be much further on a stationary bike though.

On a side note I messaged Cam last night about the forum quotes not working.  Happened once before.

This is an Aussie attempt to break into the market. Only a prototype at the mo, but I think it's the way of the future.

Wow, that brings back some memories.
I remember thinking that I would sell a kidney to get my hands on a VEETWO. Its amazing looking back at what I thought was awesome. I also drooled over BMW's K100. lmao
And the Hunwick Hallam, wasn't that the predecessor to the Britton?

yes the Catavolt is an electric bike. I cant wait to ride one when they're on the market. 100% torque from 0 revs onward.

Yep the impact on all sectors of the motor trades will be hit hard & some will be devastated ,  as well as all business in general affected  with a company that big closing . It happened a few years ago when Mitsubishi closed to a lesser extent . I must admit , I'm not surprised , & have thought it only a matter of time , but must admit ,even though the motor trade has been good to me ( I'm a motor trimmer ) I'm glad I'm at this end of my working career  & not the start ....................They are also closing the motor trimming apprenticeship here in SA , & ours will be the last one to go through before they close it .( I and a few others got the funding to keep it going 14 years ago when they wanted to close it down back then , so at least a few more lads got to go through their apprenticeship.)
I suppose I'm also lucky to be in the repair , restoration & custom side of the trade , so I think that  will carry on for quite a few years to come .
What with Ford to go as well , you can only speculate about Toyota .

Toyota will fold also. The small offshoot suppliers cannot survive with only one buyer. Thats the fact.  Where did a country like Australia, Get it so Wrong ?  Bad management.

And with those losses of jobs comes many more. Suppliers, parts manufacturers, courier companies, taxis etc, then the ones who supply to those companies. Someone said it could be up to 20,000 jobs lost here with the ripple effect on the rest of the community (or was it 200,000). Right down to little shops who fail because people cannot afford as much as before, because everyone nearby is out of work??? Maybe a bit dramatic, but possible you think???

I also heard that during WW2, Holden and Ford factories (as well as many others) supplied equipment for frontline troops. How will this work now? Maybe the frontline troops have no gear??? I think you call this "Insurance".

Being as we are the major steel supplier to Toyota, word around is Toyota will follow. Parts manufacturers can't keep their price down with only one buyer. We heard a few weeks ago Toyota are already trying to slash costs. This will surely put even more pressure on them.

I suppose we can only wonder how long Holden would have lasted had the Aust govt. given them backing when they were developing the 48/215 back in 1947 instead of General motors stepping up to the plate  when our Govt declined . I realize there will still be a sales industry from Holden , Ford ,Etc , but dismal employment here in Aust , where only so many new / retrained positions will be available must surely have a major impact on that same sales industry , and all others as well .

It's a sad day when we lose yet again another manufacturer. It's got me stuffed what the government is thinking, we can only pull stuff out of the ground for so long, especially without dealing with it locally. Fuck me the way things are going the chinese are buying up farms at an alarming rate. It'll be a matter of time before everyhting we buy is from China. We'll have no jobs here and the boat people will keep on showing up on our shores. I wonder how my 4yr old son will go for a job when he leaves school.

I'm a Holden man and I can't believe Gm are pulling out after 65 years of a great partnership. Looks like cheap arse chinese cars from here on in until their wages are too expensive and the next cheap country starts copying their shit. it's happened before with the Japanese, Taiwanese etc. We should've weathered the storm and subsidised our own vehicles rather than making everyone pay ridiculous amounts of money for a local made item.

I was thinking about it today. I envisaged someone like a Korean manufacturer buying a factory and making a new highly efficient four cyl car. Getting good sales. Increasing productivity. Going full guns, and then wait for it? Workcover walks in and shuts it down.

I know there are greater forces at play here , but I can never fully understand why most other countries impose import tariffs on imported cars /  bikes to protect their manufacturing industries  in their country & yet Aust just kept lowering the tariffs on cars imported into Aust

Because we are a small market. For us to be competitive in the global market we can't afford to have tariffs on imported goods. Otherwise no one would trade with us. In other words they would sell where ever they can get the best price.
Unfortunately it has created a one side tariff system. We pay high tariffs to sell into other countries and they pay peanuts to sell into ours
