Yeah, share that sentiment - the fires looked horrific on the news.

I dread this time of year every year, and thoughts go to those that are effected,

its starts with fires, and ends in floods, bad times ahead

All good up here in Katoomba though I could see the smoke in the not too far distance toward Bell, Mt.Victoria and Lithgow.  A school I work at casually at Springwood (NSW) was evacuated earlier today and the news is saying that 40 or more homes have been destroyed in that area.  I believe they are blaming that fire on a fallen power line which isn't surprising as the winds were gusting up to 104kms here earlier.  Certainly a worry with all the nutbags about eager to drop a match in the bush. Twisted Evil   At least the temps have cooled now which may ease the crisis.  Not good weather for riding a bike either!

Its amazing how many of those 'tossers' of cigarette butts you see - even in situations such as there is now in the Blue Mountains, people just toss the butts out the window without even considering what they could be causing.Evil or Very Mad

I've now readied my home for the worst - hopefully I'm being over cautious.  Had a new kitchen about to be built this week but told the cabinet maker to 'hold off' until after Wednesday (no need for a new kitchen if the rest of the house is in cinders!Sad )

If I'm forced to evacuate I've been thinking of ways I could get my bike out and to a safe place (outside the local Police Station was a thought) then back to the house and get out of there in the car with its load of personal items etc..  Katoomba isn't in the firing line yet - however the authorities are predicting Wednesday as the 'horror' day up here with possibilities of the fire travelling east to Blackheath, Katoomba and Leura.  Just have to suck it and see like the rest of the community..

Thanks for the wishes.. No car not loaded yet, have most important items in a bag at the front door, buckets of water in the laundry, water in the tub and bath as well as one of those 25 litre fire backpacks full up.. Thought i'd wait until the news tonight and see what they predict for tomorrow before I pack any further; I'd hate to put all the stuff in my car and then find someone has knocked it off when I went up to the shops or something!

Blue Mountains Bush Fires

Post  bruiser2310 on Mon 21 Oct 2013, 10:56 pm

Hey Bruce,
long time no speak mate.we went to hazo fire station for a meeting tonight.
telling us not to worry at this stage but be ready.we are ready with all valuables up in storage at Lawson.
taking the bike up there tomorrow.got the cages ready for the animals.
Although people have lost houses, terrible thing but they are alive .
but the media is a little bit over the top.
the fires up at the mines has burnt 41,000 hectares of crown land but not shown on TV.
I personally do not want to see the pain and heartache these people are going through .
That`s private in my eyes..Who knows,I might be next.but come around with a camera they will wear it.
That`s my 2c worth.
My wife and I have offered assistance through facebook and have donated already to Hazo fire station.
we are in this together.I have never seen people so helpful and caring in all my life
GO AUSSIES.
Greg

Re: Blue Mountain Bushfires

Post  Bhoffo on Tue 22 Oct 2013, 9:25 pm

Hi Bruiser,
when all this passes we're going to have to go for a ride - we deserve it!!  The firies are doing a great job - I'm staying at my place too; hope that all the preparations I've made will see me through.  Going to take the bike out tomorrow morning and put it somewhere safe for the day.  Very smoky up here tonight so the wind has definitely changed to a northerly, people I know went to one of the community meetings here tonight too at Katoomba and were basically told to 'go' early if you intend to.  They said as well not to expect fire trucks to come to your home to help as they will be busy elsewhere...

So here I stay - for the time being at least.  I don't have to worry about my GF or wife being with me either, just me - so that perhaps is a positive!Razz

Temps are forecast to be in the high 'teens' on Thursday - so if all goes well tomorrow the lower temps should help all concerned.

See you all on the other side!

Best of luck to all threatened - it seems luck plays a part, we saw this also with the 2003 Canberra fires with some houses surviving and neighboring houses burnt.  Even extensive preparations failed to save some whilst others escaped.  Embers hitting in advance of the fire front were a real threat. This might sound pessimistic but one thing to have on you/take with you is proof of identity documents - the Vic fires showed that people had trouble getting assistance afterwards if they couldn't establish who they were.

Thanks for all the wishes guys over the past weeks:bounce: ... Everything good now where I am (and Bruiser too I think) - lucky for us the wind pushed the fire toward the north east rather than just east; not so good for the people living in clusters along the Bells Line of Road though (Bilpin/Mt.Tomah etc) - so we live to play another day!  Had some heavy rain too a couple of days back which must have helped quench the fires remaining..Smile

Went for a ride  through Winmalee yesterday and while I saw lots of burnt bushland I also saw houses surrounded by burnt bush but the houses were untouched, thanks to the firefighters. I know there is house destruction up there but they must have been down some of the side streets which were closed except to residents.

Planning on taking the Bells Line of Road to Cowra on saturday and take some video through there.
