Guys...meet Matilda

Post  Cameron on Sat 07 Sep 2013, 6:11 pm

First topic message reminder :

So here she is. My restoration project.
I picked her up last weekend and the excitement is growing.

1969 Volvo P1800s

She has some rust, mainly in the rear. The front half seems fine.
So first off the wiring loom will be stripped out and inspected. Then the rest of the interior will be taken out and all the chrome trims will be removed. Then ill cut out the rust and prime it, so she can sit there for 12 months with no further body work and she wont turn into dust.

Ill keep you posted with all updates.

I see your labeling everything. Thats very good, as it may be a while before it goes back together. Get yourself a few of those plastic containers with compartments to put all your bolts and screws in and label those as well. RH door. LH door. RH fender etc...... And a camera to take photos of everything as you pull it apart! Not just "this is how its going guys" but actual detail shots. Down the track if you have one of those "how the hell does this go back together again?" moments you'll be glad you took photos.
Have fun! Very Happy

I have lots of photos.
Unfortunately no panels come appart without cutting. The rear is one piece, and the front is one piece.

Nobody else has asked, so I will. Why Matilda? Whats the story with the name?

No story behind the name. All good cars i own get names. Was just driving home after picking her up, the missus suggested it. And it stuck.
Unfortunately no more progress. Dirtbike riding took a hold of my weekend so Matilda will get attention next weekend.

So im making good progress with the sanding now. Probably 1/3 of the way through. Takes a while when you can only spend an hour here, 2 hours there.
Anyway the rear, boot, inner wings and roof are all back to metal. Uncovered some pretty dodgy welds along the way.
Ill post some photos of the work later today.

Hows the fingers Cam ?  Do you have to put some kind of sealer on the bare metal right away to prevent the rust from coming back ?  I've heard that if you leave it only for just a short time then the rust will come back through eventually.  Whats the plans for the drive chain ?  Standard ? or spice it up a bit. Nice little turbo Japper under the hood. Make her a little  "Sleeper "  Twisted Evil

ps.  Have you Popped the question yet ?   Very Happy

Your right Hammy the rust will come back within days if the steel is left uncoated. Needs at least one coat of primer. A tarp will slow it down but it wont prevent it.
I'm sure Cam's already got it sorted

In Hammys case, he's surrounded by salt water!
Then again, I suppose we all are, just that our island is just a touch bigger than Hammys   Very Happy

I have oil to put on it from PPC which allows it to sit there for a year or so and prevents rust. Good shit. I havnt put any on yet. Ill get the car completely back to metal and do it all in one hit. Been about 8 weeks since the sanding began, no signs of surface rust.

Cam, just a note. Not just surface rust due to air/moisture. Also finger prints are a major problem, acid from our skin can attack bare metal straight away. I would go over the areas you have done with some prepsole to remove contaminants and spray/cover with the oil straight away. it takes little time to do it right and a hell of a long time to fix the mistake after you have the top coat on. Even under coat is porous, resist the urge to keep touching the bare metal or undercoat at any cost. Keep your mates away too and a car cover over it. Working in a shop with other people, god knows what will be sat on it while your not there.

So another update on the old girl. Not long now until she is back to bare metal. She isnt so pretty in some spots under all that bog. But mostly is all good. Actually im surprised how straight the body actually is.
This i the worst of it.

My next update will be when she is all sanded back. Hopefully next week!!

Looks like lots of hours ahead Cam.  Are you just going to bog it, or are you going to lead it.  My very first after school job was for a panel beater. He used to do leading. I think it is probably a dying art.

There is still a few around that can lead wipe, it's a dying art and very expensive to get done

We tried lead loading on my ex's Honda Civic. You need to be very careful not to put too much heat in. Unfortunately we did and distorted the roof panel a little.
We did however successfully seal the seam, but still ended up using bog to get the final finish.

I guess that's the difference experience makes

yeah not sure exactly what ill do yet. Its going to get the rust repaired soon so ill get his advice. You can get all replacement skins as well which i need for the rear. But the front ones are very expensive.

So the oiling has begun. Looks all nice and shiny now. Hopefully oiling will be finished tomorrow, if not, within the next few days.

Pictures will come soon. All those hard, long hours of sanding have payed off.
